    1998 9.9 Mercury 2 stroke idling issue

Not sure if this will help but I put this video together for 70’s-80’s era outboards. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiWbTXH-Vdq6YQlL0GXlJ0DngesdG9VGs&si=YgR7DFsEsNIlE0D9

First Successful Outing On The Lake

I am extremely reluctant to use starting fluid on a 2 stroke. Its very dry stuff and dilutes and removes lubricant oil from the cylinder walls and piston rings. This lube is vital to the life of your engine. No lube leads to scored cylinder walls and expedited piston ring wear. Leading to poor...

    1979 9.8 Carb Bowl

As of today, this 1979 9.8 is now my spare back-up outboard. After a few weeks of thinking it through, visiting each dealer, lifting each outboard to check weight etc, I made a decision. A new 2025 Merc 9.9 EFI is now mine. I purchased extended premium warranty too. There has been set backs and...

    1979 9.8 Carb Bowl

Agreed @dingbat if/when the silicone breaks down if will plug up carb orifices. I wanted to do something to prove where the leak was coming from. My mind was settled when this worked. I will consider finding a quad ring to seal it up long-term. Something ethanol-proof.

    1979 9.8 Carb Bowl

Following up to share success in resealing the bowl. I cut the seal. I fit it in place and cut off a piece as it was too long. I fit the seal tightly in its grove ensuring a good tight fit. Removed seal. Carefully applied a thin layer of Permatex Motorseal sealant which does not break down...

    1979 9.8 Carb Bowl

I have been struggling to get the carb bowl to seal. I also ordered a new OEM Quicksilver gasket kit. It won’t seal. I’ve tried adjusting the float level incase it was over fueling. No improvement. The old cork bowl gaskets seem long gong. The ethanol in todays fuel may be a contributing...

compression on a 9.9 pull start

I have a pull start Merc 1979 9.8 2 stroke that only makes 76 psi. Sure it is low. Yet it runs well and idles very well for hours on-end while fishing. (trolling). The one thing it seems to struggle with is a cold start. It won’t suck hard enough to pull in enough fuel from the carb. A small...

    Mercury Tillotson Carburetor question

I am also interested in this topic as I run 77-79 9.8 Mercs. I was unsure how to decipher the two different carb manufacturers. I will try looking for the carb markings based on your comments above. Thanks. I am hoping to get an OEM Merc carb rebuild kit or two. The aftermarket ones I have been...

    Mercury 7.5 not peeing

The white plastic alignment tube mentioned above is circled here in green. 2 special joint water seals are circled in blue. The water pissing out of these seals won’t help you much. Gotta contain the water within the lines to maintain pressure up to the top where the engine is. The waterpump...

    Mercury 7.5 not peeing

When you replaced the water pump and reattached the lower leg, are 100% sure you aligned the shorter white plastic tube up over the copper tube that runs up inside the leg? Can be easy to overlook. Ya gotta guide it up over the copper tube inside. Also consider that there are special rubber...

    79-84 mercury 9.8 thunderbolt

I’ll follow with interest as I own a few same era 9.8 Mercs. I find the carbs to be very picky and sensitive. They want to be dial’d-in just right. One of my 9.8’s when cold will not start. No amount of choke or repeated pulling helps. It refuses to fire unless I inject a shot of raw fuel...

    SIBS - Outboard Pairing

I'm learning more each week that I get out on the water in my 3.3M SIB. My boat has a soft inflatable floor. My boating buddy has a rigid aluminum floor. His SIB is also 3.3M. Both boats are rated for max 15 hp. It seems to me 15 hp and its relative top speed can't be fully utilized unless...

    1977 Evinrude 15hp pull start

The upcoming carb work could be a bit frustrating. We’re here to help, so post your questions. In my opinion owing an old 2 stroke outboard means doing repairs at home. Do you have or have access to an ultrasonic cleaner? They are great for carb work.

    Low speed jet adjustment

Pilot screw settings can be tricky on these Mercs. You don’t always get instant results after making adjustments. It can take a few seconds for fuel burn to have an effect. Cleaning up whats in the crankcase. Make an adjustment then wait a bit to see what effect it has. Rev the throttle up a...

    Mercury 6HP "dead spot"

The pilot jet seems to be ok, as it idles. When you open the throttle, more air enters into the cylinders via the carb. This process should draw more fuel through the carb’s main jet. The main jet could be plugged. If fuel cannot enter via the main jet the engine will stall. I’ll suggest it may...

    4 stroke v 2 stroke. Outboard

I believe you are correct @racerone . I have been told the ‘90 8.0 is rated at the prop. I have no proof but test results seem to support that theory as well.
