Temperature Switch OMC p/n 0386686 Test

I just completed testing both of the NOS temperature sensors. I used peanut oil in an electric fryer (image attached) which enabled me to raise the temperature of the oil from 200 degrees F to 230 degrees F in 5-degree increments without dealing with the rolling boil water creates at 212 degree...

Temperature Switch OMC p/n 0386686 Test

Jimmbo, I will retest both switches in cooking oil to ensure I cover the entire range specified for the temp switch closing temperature which is 211 +/-6 degree F per the OEM Service Manual. I'll look for switch closure/continuity somewhere between 205 degree F to 217 degree F (and even higher...

Temperature Switch OMC p/n 0386686 Test

The goal here is to replace a faulty temperature sensor that was disconnected since it failed in a closed switch position immediately upon spring cold start up. I have a Fluke IR gun and I verified both my heads are running at appropriate temperatures whether at idle or blasting down the lake. I...

Temperature Switch OMC p/n 0386686 Test

racerone, possibly you missed that I followed your advice and got a second one from the seller, but it too failed the test. Respectfully, I don't understand why I would install a temp sensor switch that doesn't close when subjected to 212-degree Fahrenheit. It might feel good to have it in...

Temperature Switch OMC p/n 0386686 Test

cwella, thanks for your reply defining the correct test procedure. Your procedure matches my test procedure and the procedure defined in my OMC service manual. I also confirmed wire continuity from each terminal to the solder terminal point near the Bakelite housing prior to the test. The seller...

Temperature Switch OMC p/n 0386686 Test

Understood, I have been taking the temperature sensor surface to 212-degree F using boiling water, but the switch does not close to get continuity and audible confirmation. With past single tan wire temp sensor switches, I checked continuity and confirmed functionality connecting between the tan...

Temperature Switch OMC p/n 0386686 Test

Sorry, this is a 1986 Johnson 150 HP crossflow V6, model number J150TXCDC. My original temperature sensor only had one tan wire with a knife connector and there was not a separate ground wire. The "new old stock" p/n 0386686 has a tan wire with a knife connector and a black wire with a ring...

Temperature Switch OMC p/n 0386686 Test

I purchased the above "new old stock" temperature switch which came in the original OMC Bombardier box complete with brown instruction tag p/n 319993. Unlike my original sensor, this sensor has the additional ring terminal that gets connected to the engine block. Prior to installation, I am...

Tilt Pin Replacement for 1987 Johnson 15 HP

Given there is no reference to the material being stainless steel, I agree the new OEM tilt pin cost is out of line. I'll give the Amazon aftermarket option a try even though it only mentions "premium stainless steel". I doubt it's 316 stainless, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the replies.

Tilt Pin Replacement for 1987 Johnson 15 HP

The original tilt pin has corroded over the years with recent saltwater usage rapidly increasing the corrosion. The current available part number is 432453. Is there any chance this new replacement part number is made out of 304 or 316 stainless steel? If not, would it be worth fabricating one...

Fuel Line USCG Type for Under RIB Floor

OK thanks, I will go with the A1 since I don't know whether I would comply with fuel discharge section (b) (2) (ii) of 183.558. Any experience with flexibility of the Trident Marine A1-15 Part Number 365-0560 ?

Fuel Line USCG Type for Under RIB Floor

I am moving my fuel tank to the bow locker on my Highfield Classic 290 Hypalon RIB. Is USCG Type B1-15 hose acceptable for the entire run from the bow gas tank to the engine, or is USCG Type A1-15 required under the floor from the bow gas tank to the water filter separator on the transom?

1987 Johnson J15RCUD with Racor Filter and Longer Fuel Line Run

Thanks for your thorough reply to my questions. I was not aware of the Racor SNAPP filter series. At first glance it looks like a lower cost option, but the overall size seems larger. I'll also stick with the 10 micron filter given your comments. My main concern is not to have a fuel delivery...

1987 Johnson J15RCUD with Racor Filter and Longer Fuel Line Run

I am using this motor on a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) that will be used on a cruising sailboat. I am interested in adding a Racor 120R-RAC-01 fuel filter and water separator to clean fuel purchased in the Caribbean islands. I am also moving the gas tank to the bow locker of the RIB. My...

1987 Johnson 15 HP Choke Linkage Hanging Up

I disassembled the choke linkage and shaft assembly. I moved the location of the Choke Override Spring end creating more torsional force which ensures the throttle plate pivots with the Choke Lever movement. This has corrected my problem. See attached image with red arrow showing the proper...

1987 Johnson 15 HP Choke Linkage Hanging Up

Is the end of this spring in the wrong location? The spring is identified by red arrows in attached pictures and #14 in above diagram. When closing the choke valve, the choke plate shaft does not rotate with lever (#19) movement. I believe the black plastic part (#24) should remain in contact...

    1987 Johnson 15 HP J15RCUD Lost Spark

Racerone, You Called It! I replaced the Power Pack and the engine fired right up! I'm happy I was in the 90% club for the above symptoms described! It's on to some tuning. Thanks for the help!

    1987 Johnson 15 HP J15RCUD Lost Spark

I performed a Stop Switch Test and checked the Ignition Coil, Charge Coil, and Sensor Coil resistance measurements. All resistance measurements met specification. I purchased an Electronic Specialties Model 640 Direct Voltage Adapter for use with the Klein CL800. I checked and passed the Charge...

1987 Johnson 15 HP Choke Linkage Hanging Up

Racerone, yes, since this 1987 is new to me, I successfully rebuilt the fuel pump given the diaphragm may be 38 years old.
