1958 westbend 12hp cooling weep hole?

I was given this 1958 West Bend Barracuda 12hp outboard many years ago but never really had a use for it until now. I got it out on my boat and managed to get it fired and running - it actually runs great but idle is not so good (I can work on that though) problem is, I did not see anywhere...

    new unique project

I used info on this site extensively when I did some major work to a 1969 K&C Thermoglass bowrider I/O a number of years ago. The K&C is now up for sale as it is too big for my lifestyle (smaller lakes), and when I picked up my latest project I just had to come back here :D I wonder if anyone...

watched a boat hit a rock

Unbelieveable, just unbelievable. I have been reading the SHT thread for a couple years now and get a good chuckle out of the tales. Finally I have my own. There were 12 of us on 3 boats tied up together on a very large lake. We were fairly close to shore in about 14ft of water, and it got...

Those of you in HOA communities....

the "boat storage in HOA..' thread got me to thinking about something. First of all, let me say that I would never live in an HOA. I understand, respect and appreciate the benefits they give to those looking for them, but my lifestyle does not suit an HOA, and besides most of the people in an...

    My biggest pet peeve

I'm not prone to letting things bother me, but for some reason this does. Yesterday I go to Can Tire to buy a few items. I go through the store and pick up my handful of small items (easily concealed in a pocket - this becomes relevant to the story) and then I need a small pill size battery...

new steering cable, new steering issue....

My boat is a 1969 I/O bowrider tri hull. So, when I bought it, the steering cable was way too long and ran up and down the side of the boat giving very stiff steering. A few weeks ago it actually let go (a crimp pulled apart) and that was that. Now what are the chances that somewhere out...

    Engine mount material

I redid the deck and engine mounts (inline 4) in my 1969 17.5 I/O and when I reinstalled the motor I just used some rubber conveyor belting as a vibration isolator between the metal engine mount brackets and the wood/glass deck. I'd like something maybe a little less dense so it won't transmit...

question re loading I/O on trailer

Ah, the new issues that pop up when a resto is done..... I've just started boating with my 69 K&C Thermoglass 17.5 bowrider I/O. Never thought about it before but reading around on this site and I saw some references that the transom should be supported by the bunks of the trailer. I checked...

The ramp from hell.....is it just me?

The local lake had the ramp redone a couple of years ago and every time I launch there (which isn't often), I have problems recovering. Seems to me the ramp is too steep. If I back the trailer in far enough for the bow to get over top of the bow roller, the rest of the boat is still floating...

1969 OMC steering cable - transom boot?

this is a 120 I/O and the steering cable goes through the transom. should there be some sort of rubber boot on the transom mount and the steering rod to keep water from getting in there? I have searched around and can't see any reference to one, but it seems strange to have that area unsealed...

    OMC 120HP I/O won't keep running..

ARGGHHHH!! I am so close. Owned this boat 3 years, did the wood fiberglass work and got the engine/drive back on. 1969 GM 4cyl with rochester 2GC carb. coil, points, condensor, plugs, cap, wires, rotor are all new. started in the driveway (leg in a pond) and it started and idled incredibly...

    rochester 2GC carb question

hoping someone can give me a hands on, yes I have done this answer.... my 1969 OMC 120hp has a rochester 2GC carb and leaky brass float. I tried to resolder it but can't get it sealed so I am thinking of just getting a new float. however, the parts places that I have been to do not list a...

    question about unleaded gas

I am about to get my 1969 I/O into the water for the first time since I've owned it, and many years since the previous owner had it in the water. What's the deal with leaded/unleaded gas these days - I know leaded is not available anymore but is there an additive that I should be putting into...

    Boats have A/C???

Was just browsing some other forums and came across a question about a boater's A/C problems. This struck me as odd - what kind of boats have a/c?

    steering cable replacement - pics

69 17.5ft K&C Thermoglass 120 HP 4cyl I/O with OMC drive I need a new steering cable and cannot use the original because it was replaced at some point in the boats life and is waaaaaay too long. I'd like to do it right. I've found the websites that show how to measure - no problem there. The...

plug over grease nipple - OMC 120 I/O

I should have got pics but I'll try to explain this as best I can. On my leg, on the outside of the upper gearcase, there is a red plastic plug that when removed gives access to a grease nipple that puts grease where the upper gearcase sits on the lower. I think this is the swivel housing...

    an unhappy impeller with pics!

Woo! I think I dodged a bullet on this one - thanks to iboats. Getting ready to put my I/O into the water after 2 years of replacing stringers/transom/floor/motor mounts. Started it with the leg in water but didn't get any water up to the engine (didn't run long at all). Had read enough on...

size of outboard as 'spare' on I/O?

My boat is a 69' and although the engine runs like a top (still sorting a couple issues with the leg) it is 38 years old.....WOW!, when I think about that..... Anyway, I have a bracket that bolts through the transom for mounting an outboard, beside the sterndrive. Any words of advice on...

    69 OMC 120 (part 2) with pics

I am sooooo close to getting in the water I can taste it, but looks like it won't be as soon as I thought. This has been a 2 year project so far - complete new floor, stringers, transom, engine mounts on this I/O. rebuilt the tilt and trim motors (they were pretty much seized from water but...
