Difference Between Merc 500 and 650

Hi. I just wanted to ask a quick question. What are the main differences between a 1965 Mercury 4 Cylinder 650 and a 1973 Mercury 4 cylinder 500 other than horsepower? I have the 500 and was looking at getting a 650 from 1965 but was wondering if any parts were interchangeable. Thanks!

    1973 Merc 500 Problems

Hi All. I am at a stand still with where to go next on this issue. What is happening is the motor is dying on hard acceleration from idle. Every once in a while you can get it to work. If you idle around to pick up a skier or tuber then "hit it" she will 80% of the time die out. Then it can...

    1973 Merc 500 Compression Readings

Hi All. I just did a compression check after having some issues with idle and acceleration and a carburetor rebuild and this is what I found. Cylinders 1 through 3 are 126 lbs and cylinder 4 is at 108 lbs. Is there something starting to go wrong here? It only has about 25 hours since the...

    Long or Short Shaft Mercury?

From this serial number off of a 1964 Mercury can you tell if it was a short or long shaft model? 1710141 I do not have the motor yet. I was trying to do some research before buying on eBay. Seller states that from the top of the mounting to the middle of the prop shaft is 26 inches. Thanks.

    1964 Mercury 650 Info

Does anyone know anything about the Merc 650's? I have a 1966 Larson Fiberglass boat that says it rated for a 55HP motor but on other websites I see 18 - 70 HP is ok. When I look at photos of the Merc 650 it looks like it is 35" tall from the transom which would look huge on the boat. It...
