1979 Merc 40hp: removing lower unit....losing my mind!

First off, this motor sat outside, uncovered for approx 9 months to a year but supposedly ran just before that. Ok...I have been trying to remove the lower unit from my 40hp for about a week now and I am absolutely losing my mind. I'm about ready to take a sledge hammer to it. Please?!? Can...

1979 Merc 40hp...trouble removing lower unit

I have removed 3 nuts (#s 3, 4, & 5) & loosened 2 (not enough room to completely remove yet {#s 1 & 2). So, that's 5 total. I can only get a small gap to show...feels like I'm missing something holding this beast together. Why wont it budge, or any ideas how to "persuade" it to let go?

Merc wiring diagram...what is this symbol??

I have this wiring diagram and seems straightforward...but I have no idea what the symbol, I've marked in red, is? Is it just a stray mark or something pertinent?

Can you "explain" a spun prop?

Yesterday, while fishing, I found myself in some pretty shallow water. The motor was running but I shut it off as soon I realized just how shallow. Anyways, earlier in the day, the motor ran fine. But after a buddy tried to crank the motor (in the mud) I started noticing drastic differences. If...

    Homemade Guide-ons

Thought I would share my Guide-On design to help those wanting to make their own or help "create a spark" for something different. I didn't have the money to buy some so I "thought outside the box", incorporating things around the house that were just taking up space. Started off with a...

Possible to shorten teleflex shift & throttle cables?

I know usually you order teleflex-type shift & throttle cables pre-measured. I have a set that I want to transfer from one boat to another. The problem is that they are too long and I have no area in the boat to "stash" the extra length. Is it possible to cut these cables myself to the length...

large dent in aluminum hull...what would you do?

I was given this boat so how this happened, I don't know. The dent in the picture was repaired with some type of epoxy, etc. Obviously, the boat was taking on water after whoever messed up. Anyways, the epoxy was dripping as it hardened, leaving little stalagmites everywhere. When I picked up...

Cleaning stains from aluminum with Mr Clean Magic Eraser

I was given a boat that sat in the water for a long time, then taken out & left in an area that was muddy (dirt and red clay). There were stains around the boat that even a pressure washer wouldn't take off!!! I decided to try the Mr Clean Magic Eraser after reading another post on iboats...

tiller to remote steering...should tiller be removed?

I'm in the process of converting a Merc 20hp from tiller to remote steering. I have everything (I think) connected and the process has been fairly easy. However, I'm @ the point where I'm testing the steering from lock to lock and I've noticed a "slight" clearance issue between the steering link...

    402 40hp stator 398-5255 wires

Does anyone know the wiring sequence/positions for a 402 40hp Merc stator, part #398-5255? I have attempted to repair wires that broke so close to the stator that I was unable to tell which wire was which. I separated the "buds", cleaned them, and soldered new wires to each. If you were to flip...

1979 Merc 402 40hp broken stator wires...can it be saved?

I lucked up and got a great deal on a boat & motor that sat out in the open for an unknown length of time. I was told that it was running within the last two years. The weather did a number on a good bit of the wiring. All wires to the stator broke after the slightest touch, as did a couple of...

Cable drum: Found! Shopping "Brand New"

Even though I have resolved my problem of finding a used cable drum for a cable-pulley steering system, I continue to search for items to be used with it. I happened to find a website where they sell brand new cable drums...

    Where can I buy this?

I need help. Is there a company or a site where I can purchase a steering cable "drum" that you would find on a cable-pulley steering "column" or the entire steering assembly? I have seen a few on ebay but the final bids on some of these are pricey. I'm not looking to "restore" a classic, so it...

Can anyone tell me where to find a complete sheave assembly for a 1970 Merc 20hp? By complete, I mean spring, retainer, bushing, and pin. The only thing that pops up on Google is what I get everywhere, so far: Part no longer available.

How much $ should I ask?

I have a 1968 Mercury 6hp (fwd & rev) that has new water pump and impeller, new fuel pump and fuel lines, and cleaned up nicely, new paint and chrome striping. Fresh gear lube and greased. Looks and runs like new and purrrrs. What's a fair price I should ask to sell it?

    reconnecting lower unit

I've read a few post concerning this and also read the manual I have. Unfortunately, none made it simple to understand. 1968 Merc 6HP: Can someone tell me how to get it back on the right way?!?! Also, do I have to put a screw in the FLUSH opening; is it necessary?

    '68 Merc 6HP water pump/fuel pump probs?!?!

The motor has new fuel lines, new water pump(housing and all), new fuel pump diaphragm and gaskets. When I replaced the water pump I had a little trouble getting the foot back on. Eventually, I got it back in but happened to shift into neutral before I did it. Now it seems as though the prop...
