    Prop shaft play

I recently hit a big rock with the outdrive, alpha 1 gen 2. I have a replacement lower, gear lash seems minimal but there's ~.085" end play in the prop shaft. Should I be concerned? Should I be shimming to reduce it? Thanks.

    Prop shaft removal, alpha

So I recently discovered that when they lower the water level by 10" in a lake, it has the same effect as raising big rocks by the same amount. Punched a 1?" hole in the lower gear case, made a serious scrape along (but didn't break) the skeg, minor damage to ss prop, and bent the prop shaft. I...

    Where's the oil getting out?

I ran my 5.7 Alpha 1 on muffs 2 weeks ago, saw a purple sheen on the expelled water. Oil level showed low, I put a quart in. Took it for a short ride, checked, oil low again. It was overheated 1 time 9-10 years ago, intake was blocked by weeds and no alarm back then. So, I'm thinking head...

    Setting timing on a 4.3?

A friend's boat backfires a couple of times on acceleration from idle to plane. It's a '99 4.3 Volvo I/O in a Glastron 175, with low hours since new. He had the carb cleaned by a professional shop, replaced the fuel filter. The temp gauge goes to only 120? F on plane, so a new stat & gasket is...

Quicksilver Laser II doesn't fit an alpha?

I have an alpha gen 2 outdrive, tried to put a Quicksilver prop # 48 16548-23 prop on it, and the blades hit the trim tab. The shell appears to be a bit too far back on the hub, as the machined recess is ?" out of the housing, and the bronze hub and aluminum shell were flush with each other. I...

    Alpha Gen 2 question

My outdrive has provision for a gear lube reservoir, (there's a ball bearing behind a maroon rubber seal), but there's only a hole in the transom assembly. (I bought the parts from different sources to convert from OMC stringer). Are the transom parts available separately? I see the plug on the...

    What sets bellhousing height?

I'm ready to bolt the Merc gen 2 bellhousing to my 5.7, then hoist it to the inner transom for connection and alignment. The main engine mounts are 3/4" NF studs set in rubber, and obviously will be used for fine adjustment. But what goes under the slotted bellhousing feet?

    Shift plate differences?

I need a shift plate for an alpha gen 2, for use with a 5.7 . Will one from a bravo work?

OMC to Merc with Seacast pt. 3

Continued from pt 1 at; http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=225270 and pt 2 at http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=225271 I applied a layer of fibreglass over the Seacast transom inside, gave it a light sanding, then painted it and the engine bay floor with 2 part epoxy. Outer...

    Simple thru hull exhaust

After I posted pics of my headers, I got a question about the thru hull parts. I thought I'd post a pic in case someone else wanted to see. They're all home made, (I'm of Dutch descent :D), relatively easy to do. The shaft is milled flat inside the tube and holds a 3" round x 3/32" disk. The...

OMC to Merc with Seacast pt. 2

Continued from "OMC to Merc with Seacast pt. 1" at http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=225270 I fastened another piece of laminate board inside for a form, then sealed the seams with spray foam as a precaution against leaks. The foam probably wasn't necessary. The laminate stops 2/3 up...

OMC to Merc with Seacast pt. 1

I wanted to modernize my drive, pulled the stringer out and acquired alpha gen 2 parts to replace it. I discovered the plywood below the waterline was mush. Got it all out in ~3 hours. I made a 3-D template to mimic the Merc opening. Saves Seacast, saves a lot of cutting after. I mounted...

Marine alternators- sealed with mesh screens?

Ok, I'm confused. I thought all marine alternators had to have very fine mesh screens on the vents to contain sparks from the brushes/sliprings. I'm seeing several listings for marine alternators on fleabay where you can clearly see the internal windings. Here's one described with many matching...

    Recess opening in flywheel diameter?

I'm fitting a new triangular drive coupling from an alpha gen 2 to my '84 5.7, with a 12" flywheel. I got around the lesser diameter with 3 new bolt holes in the coupler but now I see the raised edges of the rubber bumpers sit on top of the flywheel face. My recess opening is 5-7/8", the...

Does prop hub diameter have to match lower unit diameter?

I bought a ss "Turbo" prop (Precision Propeller Inc), on eBay listed as fitting a 150 Merc. I needed one for my Merc alpha gen 2 I/O. The prop hub is 3.9", the lower unit dia is 4.75" It fits the shaft perfectly but will it operate ok in the water like that?

Does Merc transom assembly need sealant?

I hope to bolt an alpha gen 2 drive to my newly Seacasted transom soon. I see there's a rubber seal on the transom side of the assembly, but it's just barely proud of the casting in places. Should I; a) order a new one? b) put sealant on it? c) order a new one and put sealant on it? d) install...

    Seacast questions

I'm replacing a relatively small area of transom in a 19' I/O with an overhang. The upper deck is over the transom, I have 6" of space above. Is Seacast runny enough to scoop a cupful at a time from the bucket and pour into the cavity? Should there be a strip of glass cloth or roving at all...

What plywood is used for a transom?

As I prepared to fill the OMC boot hole with 3 layers of 5/8" fir plywood, I poked at the existing plywood with a screwdriver. It's partly rotten around where the screws held the boot on before. Now, I'm thinking the proper fix is to remove all the plywood and put in new. I'm hearing...

How exact does it have to be? Stringer to Gen 2

The saga so far; I made a step in the boot opening with a router for more strength, sandwiched 1 slightly larger & 2 original hole sized pieces of 5/8 plywood. Measured the center of the overhang at the top, ('84 SX190), drew a line down through the center of drain hole for vertical X line. Made...
