Well seemed to find some good information on here from all the other posts, but none seemed to answer my problem. I have a 2000 90 HP Johnson 60 Degree Optical Outboard. Last season the engine started missing every once in a while anytime we ran over 3000 RPM's below that it runs fine and it seemed to not be burning all of the oil since we were getting quite a bit of excess around the lower unit. This season before heading out we did some standard maint on the outboard...... plugs, cleaning, etc. Took it out and same problem. It got progressively worse over the next few weeks. Until last weekend when it got real bad. We actually had to chug in from some 10 miles offshore. Now we can't get over 3000 RPM at all and is actually missing if we get around 2500 RPM's, but runs fine below that without a hitch. It jumps up and down once in a while like it will go up to 4500 RPM then bog down to 2500 RPM and all of a sudden jump up to 4500 RPM and take off before bogging right back down 2000 RPM, but we cant get the boat to run. After reading on the forum I tried disconnecting the SLOW which didn't work. Checked the carberator and everything looked good. It's still having a ton of excess oil making me think one or more cylinders are not firing all the time. I think I need to replace the powerpack or maybe the stator but not sure. Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated???????????????????????????????

I'll assume that you are using an oil tank. If so, it sounds as though your gasoline side is obstructed and you are pumping less gas than you need. That would cause the engine to receive far too much oil.

You could also have one or more cylinders not firing, which would also dump the unburned fuel.

Do a compression test and a spark test. Don't start buying parts until you run through the tests.

We also tried seeing if it was anything with fuel system, but its not that. Tried pushing the Choke when it started running bad and just made it bog down worse like it was flooding. Also wanted to clarify when I say it jumps up and down when it does take off its almost like a surge like you just floored a car, it just takes off from under you and if you werent holding on it would toss you into the blue. After the surge it just bogs back down again.

We mix our oil manually and have used the same mix for 25 years. So I don't think its that. The only reason I don't think its compression is because it doesn't happen at all when were in idle or up to 2000 RPM. What would I be looking for in the compression test.

Regardless of weather you think the compression is good or not, do the compression test. It can tell clues as to where and what the problem is. It should be around 100 psi on all cylinders and within 10% between them. These guys are good. Perform the test and post back with the results. All the carb cleaning in the world will not fix a mechanical problem within the crankcase. Ezeke, and others aboard, will be glad to assist you. You just need to trust their judgment and follow their lead. Regards............ ALAN

Checked the compression and got 90's across the board. From what I read in the manual it says at this point i should change the power pack. Any other ideas guys

I would not throw parts at it until you verify the problem.

Did you check the spark? It needs to jump the gap on an inline tester a good 7/16 of an inch with a bright blue ZAP!! on all cylinders.

If the spark and compression check out, you will need to look into fuel delivery issues. Is the vent on the tank open and clear? The anti syphon valve could be stuck in a semi closed position.

Some tests to isolate would be spraying premix into the throat of the carb, does this pick it back up? Choking it? Pumping the fuel primer bulb?

What manual are you referring to? It's certainly NOT an OEM manual by any means. High Trim is right on the money, as usual. If your getting spark and have good compression, then it must be a fuel delivery issue. A few more possible problem areas would be a weak fuel pump, crimped fuel line, loose clamp (sucking air), and so on and so forth. Let's narrow it on down, shall we...... show us sparks!!! Don't use the old test light tester either, let's see it actually jump a 7/16 inch gap in open air on ALL cylinders with a ZaP !!! I would venture to guess your not getting adequate spark on one cylinder. Could be a bad coil. A rather inexpensive fix as well as an easy one. Let's hope that's all it is. BTW.......

Checked the carberator and everything looked good.

how did you do this.........exactly?
