How does the ignition work on this motor?

I know how most outboards work:

Stator produces electrical current. Switch box (or power pack etc.) in combination with a flywheel trigger decides voltage sent to a particular coil for appropriate firing of spark plub.

Now on my motor, there appears to be now swich box and the coils are known as 'CDM' which I'm assuming stands for Capacitor Discharge Module of which one of mine went bad.

Dealer said that sometimes when one goes bad, it impacts the performance of the others and even if you replace it, engine will not fire on all three cylinders.

It would be great if someone could explain how this works...

Tx.

Joe

Tell me about it!

The CDMs contain individual switchboxes. That's about the only difference. Sometimes the suspected bad CDM is fine but one of the others is bad. Here's a glimpse of how those work. While one is firing, another is providing a gound path to complete the circuit. If that ground path goes bad, it can affect the firing CDM, the non-firing CDM, or both. I don't believe that a bad CDM can damage the others, just not allow them to work.
