Hi
I just bought a used 04 50 HP EFI 4 stroke for my houseboat.
It has 100 hours on it and seems to run perfect.

Before I put it on my houseboat. Is there any maintenance I should do before I put it in the water?

I have the control box and I will need an electrical extensions and longer cables to mount the box. Are all control boxes capable of adding new cables and extensions?

Do you think 3k is a fair price with the control box?

Thank you.

I have the same motor on my houseboat, is yours a bigfoot?

If your boat is not trailable I would perform the service before fitting it onto the boat. Extended cables and looms are available. Depending on the size of your houseboat, the deadmans lanyard and trim on the control box become redundant. I personally think that $3000 is a bargain but I'm in Australia, maybe in you neck of the woods the secondhand outboard market is different.
At 100 hrs it is ready to bloom, everything has bedded in settled down. The 50 hr (one time 'running in' service) should have been done. The 100 hr hour service is a basic regular service, the factory service book lists -

100 hr service:
Lubricate all lube points
Change engine oil & filter
Replace spark plugs
Inspect & test thermostat
Check (engine) fuel filter and replace if contaminated
Check anodes
Replace gearbox oil
Lubricate driveshaft splines
Check valve clearance and adjust if required
Check power trim fluid
Inspect battery
Check control cable adjustments
Inspect timing belt

It does not mention the water pump in the 100 hr but seeing as the motor is new to you I would suggest replacing it, that way you know it's good.

If your serial number is above OT409000 the genuine mercury workshop manual for your model is 90-883065R01. I would suggest you get one because these motors can be extremely complicated to work on and diagnose faults.

That being said, it is (by far) the best outboard I have ever had the pleasure to own.
