I have a 05 150 four stroke with about 20 hours on it. I am not getting very good mileage at all. I had a 04 F150 and was getting pretty good mileage out of that with about 60 hours on it. With my 04, I could run offshore Halibut and Salmon fishing, put about 70 miles on her and burn 24 gallons of fuel.

With this 05 150, I put about 24 miles on her an I burn 17 gallons of fuel. Granted I have far less hours on it and just got the motor broke in but the mileage between the two seems very differant. The 24 miles I just put on her, the engine averaged 5000 plus rpm's and out in the ocean you only average say 4000 rpm's but it still seems like it drinks a ton more gas.

I have not noticed a strong fuel smell on anything of that nature. Anyone got any suggestions or input?

Re: 05 150 motor break in/gas mileage

I have an '05 F150 with around 25 hours on it.

Being the first Outboard I have ever owned (had 3 I/O's before this), I have no other Outboard to compare to.

With only 25 hours on this engine and a 65 gallon tank, I do not yet have a 100% valid statistical sample to be sure of gas mileage.

With that said, this engine is burning around 3 gallons/hour at what I consider a comfortable cruising speed for my area/seaconditions. My cruising speed is just shigh of 30 MPH and the engine is turning 4200 RPM.

Those are the figures in my log book which was put away in December along with the boat for the season.
