If your friend has his owners manual, it tells and shows (with pictures) how to change the oil and gear lube. Changing the gear lube is the same as a 2 stroke.
Engine oil takes 27 oz. Fill plug is under the cover on back of engine. Big Yellow thumbscrew type plug.
This picture will help with the oil drain location ( e )

Yes there is an oil filter, and if it's a USA built model between serial numbers 0T801000 and up or Belgium OP268000 up it a 35-822626Q03 if the serial numbers are below those listed, you need a Q1, not a Q03. Big difference.

When picking up the oil filter from your Merc dealer, Merc also has a 10W30, 4 stroke outboard oil. But every type oil under the sun has been used on engines with little problem when normal oil changes are done.

The drain plug looks like it is in the same position as on my 50 hp. In my manual it says to tilt the motor up and rotate the motor so that the drain plug is facing down. This makes things less messy since the old oil can pour freely, rather than just running down the leg. It also helps if you can cut the area out of a jug where the cap is to sort of fit the curve of the leg beneath the drain hole. I use a modified jug four quarts of oil comes in to catch the oil as it comes out the hole. If you try to make it drain into a pan on the ground, the oil will tend to splash abit. Also, you can use the jug to catch the oil somewhat if it tries to follow the leg rather than fall straight down.
