Helllllllllp mmeeeeeeeeee...

My '05 Bayliner 185 has recently become temperamental at the starting gate. Turn on blower, pump throttle 3x, turn key, and nothing happens. Do it again. Nothing. Again. Nothing. And then it starts.

The first time it happened, I just thought I had accidentally not put it in neutral. The second time, I thought the same. But Sunday, I was positive I had done everything right, and it took 8 or 9 tries, and then suddenly started.

This only happens at the ramp. After I've cruised for a while, then anchored up for a few hours, it starts right back up no problem.

The battery itself is new, but could there be something about sitting in the heat (it's been ugly hot here) that could be affecting the electrical connections to the starter?

You need to be more specific. When you say nothing happens do you mean the starter is not engaging and turning the engine over those 8 or 9 times or is it cranking and not starting until the 8th or 9th time you turn the key. Next time you go to cold start it, go back and lift off the flame arrestor, pump the throttle and see if the choke plates close. On mine the procedure was pump throttle one time to wide open position, return to idle position and turn the key. This closes the choke plates on the automatic choke and it would crank up every time.

Sounds like it is time to clean ALL the electrical connections.

Disconnect the battery first.

Then one at a time remove a wire.... sand the spade connector and re-attach........ every connection....... to include non-starting electrical connectors.

Ayuh,... Then a dab of Grease on each 1 will help stop the corrosion....

It's probably not your entire problem, but I used to have to try starting my boat a few times, then a mechanic recommended some stabil or star brite for a gas additive. Sure helped with the starting issues!

Okay -- so we are thinking it's an issue with corrosion on the electrical connections?

yep...check connection at the starter, that orange wire has a tendency to loosen up (in my experience) and then I just get a click but starter wont turn...

Is that why it gives me trouble after it's been sitting, but once it's warmed up and been cruising for a while, it's fine? Of has that just been coincidence and I've been lucky?

What kind of troubles is it giving you? Engine not cranking, or is it cranking over fine and just not starting? You have answered that question yet, and there are a lot of people assuming that is what you mean. Could make it very hard to fix your problem if they are thinking something else.

Oh, I'm sorry. Not cranking. No click, no juice, no nothin, for several tries -- and then for no apparent reason, the next try works, it cranks fine. But only at the ramp, not after cruising for a while. Once I actually get it started the first time after sitting, it's fine for the rest of the day.

That's the thing that has me confused -- if it's a bad ignition switch, I would think it just wouldn't ever go.
