I have a 05 Larson 208LXI w Volvo 5.0GL. Winterized as usual last fall. Changed the oil, drained the block, manifolds and hoses to the impeller. Started it today on the muffs as always...and impeller housing got hot. I shut it off. I checked the routing of the impeller hoses. Top hose to the fresh water bottom hose to the engine/thermostat. ?? That's the way it looks in the manual ?? The impeller housing was smoking not good..gottta get a new impeller. Ran fine all last year.
How can I diagnose / troubleshoot this issue??

Be safe.

Disconnect hose off pump to outdrive and push water out the drive to see if water flows

I think your hose routing is correct - I'll look at mine shortly and verify.
I had ants build a nest in the raw water intake of the outdrive over the winter - completely blocked the water flow until cleaned out. Last impeller install went correctly, key lined up?

Thanks for the replies....Back washed the out drive hose. Flow was good at the out drive and no debris came out. I have always left the impeller and out drive service to the dealer. I always do the Fall winterize and then take it to the dealer every other year. It's always worked well. This was the yr to take it in...I just wanted to start it on the drive way...with muffs of course. I made sure the 'Saltwater Flush Cap was secure'.
I guess I'm surprised that I was running on muffs (with pressure) that it over heated.....it seemed like it never picked up and water.
I guess the 2yr impeller could have been worn enough that it did not pick up the water....and then proceeded to crap out. At any rate I was only at about 10,000 RPM's and shut it down quickly.
Is the next step remove the impeller housing?

Thanks Again

The VP is fairly easy (Easier then Merc) and there are plenty of you tube vids showing how to do it. Need soap or glycerin (KY Jelly) to reinstall, don't use oil or grease

It could be your impellor, replace with a OEM volvo. I just had this happen yesterday. Pump had slow leak so ordered replacement pump assembly that comes with pulley, shaft and back half of pump attached (bearing side). You just add the impellor they provided and reuse the outer part of your pump. Ran on muffs and noticed water pump was hot and engine go to 200 (never does). Pulled it apart and the 'new' impellor they supplied was sticky/gooey and stick substance all inside the pump housing now. Cleaned it all out and put the OEM volvo impellor in. Back on muffs and water pump was ice cold and engine never got above 160 when running for 10 min. Might have the same crap impellor i had. Edit-This was on an 07 5.0 GL

All dodge, you say don’t use grease. I just did when I did mine. What’s going to happen?

Petroleum products (oil, grease) are not compatible with materials the impeller is made of and can damage it. If its installed and used shortly there after, there won't be much if any issue. Its just best to use soap or glycerin

Check your pump seal O ring placement, It may not be installed correctly and it may be allowing air in and you are losing vacuum to draw water.

Thanks All...Since it was time for impeller/out drive service anyway...I dropped it to the dealer yesterday. I am a 'little bit of a wrench' but I know my limitations.
Since I only ran the engine for a few minutes...I hope it'll just be an impeller and possibly a housing. I'll keep you posted....I have always thought it was helpful to all to know the solution/outcome.

Thanks Again,

Thanks to All! Dropped it at the dealer last week.

The Tech called and indicated the 2yr old impeller fins had 'set' in a way that was not snug against the housing...and was not pulling water from the hose/muffs. Replaced the impeller w/ kit...and reported they ran it at the shop for about 30 mins and it pumped water and never overheated.

From now on, when I do my 'first spring start' on the driveway I'll run it a little bit...shut it down and touch the pump housing...to make sure it's not heating up.

All is good for Now.

Thanks for report back
That first start up, don't be shy with the water hose, turn it on full force before starting

with the AQ series of drives that you have, you really need to turn the water on full (I get a 10 foot spray out the muffs) until the motor starts
