06 mercruiser 4.3 sooting plugs ?

hi, my neighbours boat has a 4.3 mercruiser engine. he was changing the plugs last night and noticed tha the plugs looked dark and sooty..the boat also pinks a bit when slowing down. is the engine running too rich and where is it adjusted if it is?

If it's got a Carb,........ I'd start there....

What has he done maintenance wise? New fuel filter? Tuneups? Checked timing, anything.
IF it's a carbed engine and he has been running it on muffs before checking the plugs or starting and running at idle for a while they may be black. The choke alone on a carbed engine during warm up will cause them to get black like that, and until run under load for a while will stay that way.
