06' SeaRay w/ 4.3 Mercruiser loses power

My friend has a newer Searay with the 4.3 Mercruiser. When taking off, it will plane out, then suddenly lose power. It will come to a complete stop. Then, you can restart the engine, take off again, and everything is fine. This happens sporadically, but most often when taking off after the engine has been shut off, or after taking off the first time of the day. It will run fine if it doesn't lose power immediately after planing. I've tried to search for this, but I couldn't find an exact match. Does anyone else know what is going on?

Many, many possibilities. some are generic, fuel and ignition troubleshooting, some will be specific to carb or EFI, and if EFI is it TBI or MPI?

What exactly are you working on, and what exactly have your tested/verified?

I wasn't sure about TBI/MPI. After a quick google search it seems as though after 02', they are all MPI (best guess). I'm not much of a mechanic. I replaced the up trim solenoid on my boat a couple weeks ago and was surprised that it worked. Needless to say, I haven't tried anything. I was hoping it was something common and simple with a Sea Ray or the 4.3 and someone had experienced the same thing. I think it has done this the previous two seasons, and it was ignored since the boat would take off after the 1st unsuccessful takeoff. This year it seems worse since it did this on about 6/20 attempts to takeoff. At WOT, the boat would plane, then quickly come to a dead stop. It would then have to be restarted, and then it would takeoff without problems. Thanks for your response. I appreciate any more ideas.

When is the last time the water separating fuel filter was replaced?

I'm not sure. I believe it was winterized by a local dealer/mechanic. I'll try and find out tonight if they replaced it back then.
