Im buying my first boat. I have been looking at bayliners and now tahoe. only because of the price. I want to spend around 25000. I need new bc thats all the wife will let me buy. Coworkers told her to many horror storys at work. My question is it worth it to buy one of these brands for that cheap? I really want a 20" bow runner with a tower. Just for family outting and a good time. Anyone have any suggestions? or own either of these boats? thanks for the help

i went to wisconsin, to test drive the Bayliner 205, last year, they are good boats, and sharp with the towers. rugged boat, put it thru Heck, test driving them.

well if you have time go and read the thread "stringer pushing through bottom of boat" in the boat restoration forum, it is about a Tahoe and it's bad, real bad. I checked out a Tahoe at a recent boat show and it seemed to have a real flexy floor to me. Bayliner might be better at this time. I'd visit a few fiberglass repair shops and ask them what they think of the construction methods of the boats they have repaired. Those guys know for sure.

Agree with tashasdaddy, between those two brands Bayliner is generally the safer bet. If there is a Glastron dealer in your area, they are worth a look too.

I was looking for a boat around the same price range last year and ended up going with a Starcraft 1900. I looked at both boats you are looking at plus glastron and starcraft. The main reasons I went with what I did was because inside the boat felt deeper, bigger swim platform, mercury outdrive (parts are more available where i live) and the dealer. I really wanted a Tahoe because I liked the look of the boat and the dealer is about 4 miles from my house. I was told by several people I boat with to stay away from the Tahoe, a few because of the boat but mostly because of the dealer.

I had my heart set on a tahoe (deck boat) but I ended up paying more and getting a seaswirl 217 deck boat. What made my decision was someone had mentioned (maybe here?) that the screws were coming loose and rattling out in their Tahoe. The next three or four tahoes i looked at I started to look for poor workmanship and I found it everywhere. the dash was cheap and plastic, you could push and pull on it like it was hollow behind and going to snap off the first time a kid grabbbed onto it. The storage door for tackle (fish and ski model) was on crooked the windshield frame was painted (not aluminum or stainless) not sure what it was. it was just all the little things that I started to notice. We also found loose screws right on the showroom boats. when we asked the dealer about it they said it happens during shiping and they tighten everything up prior to our delivery. I didn't even know what "fit and finish" was until I started looking at boats, you get what you pay for. IMHO, I would seriously look at the searay, or glastron. I would recommend the seaswirl but they are not making them anymore. I agree, the price is tempting but I would step back and take another look.

We just purchased a Larson 186 with the 5.0 Volvo, The "Fit and Finish" was phenominal, Stainless Steel Everywhere including the Bimini Sunbrella top. The tie downs (Cleats) are the popup kind (I usually rip a pair of trunks or 2 on the old kind) the storage is fanstastic and everywhere! the ONLY thing I dont like it the door to the storage locker, it seems weak, no biggie, I'll make a nice teak one to take its place. well spent $25,000

I agree that the Tahoe's in that class (only ones I checked out at the recent boat show) are the worst put together of all I;ve seen. I am quite sure they will hold up the worst over time also! They aren't that much cheaper than Bayliner or Stingray so I say let them wither and die from lack of sales! Even entry level boaters deserve a good product, even if the materials, etc. aren't AS nice as some more expensive brands.

Check around on the internet and you'll find many stories of NEW tahoe issues. some minor but many major! Go in a different direction or you'll be another one of those forum stories!

I see little evidence this has always been the case with tahoe, seems some older ones were fine. Now, the entrylevel competition (Bayliner, Glastron, Stingray, others) are making better boats than in the past but Tahoe is going the other direction!

Oh, and btw, your wife is costing you lots of $$$ because whatever horror stories she heard were likely OLD, crappy boats that were bought by floks who knew nothing. 3-4 year old boats can be very much "like new", barely broken in, really. You'd get a nicer model with enough power and stay below your price range. But, wives are wives....what can you do?

Why is your wife talking boats with "the guys" anyhow!?!?!?!?

Last point many new buyers hear in this forum over and over, on't cheap out and buy an underpowered boat! The 20' bowriders will often have several engine choices from underpowered to more than enough for most purposes. Check the boat/power package combo with the experts here before you make a deal! MOST dealers get you hooked on an underpowered boat in the showroom because it's $2-4 k cheaper than the same boat with proper power! Beware.

Re: 08 tahoe q6 info

I somewhat disagree with all these posts. I own a Tahoe Q7i and am very happy with it, so far. Maybe its because I have strong dealer support. They fix everything that's wrong with it immediately and while I wait. But, haven't had anything major go wrong and hoping I never do. I think Tracker Marine sells so many boats that there's bound to be one out of a bunch with some sort of defect. Just my opinion.

I am with Hashi, I have an 08 q6 and have been satisfied with the boat up to this point. The look is nice a sporty and have had no problems with any screws coming loose. My dealer has been great as well. If you don't maintain a boat, any brand will have its issues. For the price I think tahoe has done ok.

Every brand has their strengths and weaknesses. I dont want to offend anyone but this thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=235489&highlight=Tahoe+Stringer+Through+Hull is fairly consistant with other reviews and test results I have read. Granted there are many happy owners who can profess otherwise but I'd take the information for what its worth.

Rinker, and Chaparral are competitive brands that have gained high marks in quality and value. May be worth a look.
