1/4'' Clear hose from 2barrel carb. to fuel pump purpose?

What is the purpose of the real small 1/4'' clear hose running from top of 2 barrel carb. to the top of fuel pump?

In the event there is a rupture of the diaphram the fuel is sent to the carb instead of spilling into the bilge. Do NOT remove it.

Thanks I just replaced it with a new one.
