I currently have a 50 hp on my 15' tri-hull. I'm considering going to 2 engines so I can get out on the ocean further without worring if I'm going to break down with no backup.

My ? is: Do 2-25's equal 50 or is it just 25hp with a little extra kick?

The later, or equal to a single 40-45 hp. More drag because or the two gearcases, you'll get worse mpg, shorter range. But on the other hand, if one fails you get home safe by the other 25 hp.

Don't Do it. I don't think you will be happy with this arrangement on a boat of this size. If you want the redundancy then just get a small 7.5 or 9.9 kicker motor. You will find most smaller or even larger boats won't get on plane witha single motor runnning in a twin enviroment. Plus the kicker will push that size boat along at a fair pace. It's great for trolling and you can use it
for other purpose like on a dingy or small john boat for those other excursions. Maybe just a radio and sea tow would be a better idea. (heck of a lot cheeper)

Im with Charles Stick with your rig.
Im no expert but it seems by going with 2 motors
your doubling everything but pleasure.
Get that kicker and enjoy the simplicity.

I'm with Charles 3
Get a kicker, a radio and sea tow. I just said 40-45 (you lose 10-20%) and two is safer than one.

for sure I agree with everyone else firstly it will put added stress on your transom and for the same price you should be able to get a new 9.9 and really have no concerns

I guess the real question is; how far out in the ocean do you want to go with a 15' boat? Secondly, I would guess that the weight would be too much for the 15' boat, not to mention room, steering, etc. Go with a light weight kicker, 6-8 HP. ;)
