The spring in pic has a locking mechanism,I can't figure it out,as soon as I let go it pops up out of the way unlocking the motor. This is my "new",old motor, new in box.Although new prop was seized and a bearing was dry.Everything worked its way out, actually motor fixed its self, thats just how reliable they are.I added a Fram airfilter 3" by 3",I sealed of the other hole with a piece of round plexi I cut out, used a short piece of 3quarter clear hose"3"long",I slid it around the intake outlet, then connected it with a plastic tube I found, tube slid into the hose and fit inside inside filter, then sealed the connections exept were the the hose goes to intake,it was a good tight fit.:)glued the connections with the amazing "goop"."The tube I found was from a tube of J/B puddy"I also added a magnet sucured inside of a spring to the inside of the fuel bowl.Lol,at first I left the magnet at the bottom of the bowl,I even drilled out the hole at the bottom so magnet would fit tight,it ended up loose and it got stuck up top blocking the fuel supply to bowl,at first I thought I had engine trouble:(,anyway I hope the spring keeps that from happening again.Next I'll like to get a K/N racing filter for some extra horses.

Re: 1.75 gamefisher, what the heck does this do

Can't help much on the lock but maybe assembled wrong or a part missing?
As far as the filter it is unnecessary. There are motors 50 or 60 years old still running perfectly
with no filter ever.Maybe a mesh screen to just keep stray objects from being injested.
A filter may cause loss of power especially if it startys to get an oil film on it.
As far as I know even todays marine engines don't have air filters.Inboards do have flash supressers in case of a back fire.

agree with SS,looks like a tilt lock but can't tell for sure.
The filter could also get swamped and cause you some grief....in that case just punch a big hole in it with your knife

filter is not needed they are made to run without airfilters all marine motors run with out air filters they run in clean conditions so theres no need u will hamper the motor with that filter on it

Don't some of you guys have the same motor,I'm not done with this post,it was meant to stump you:p but really would like to know,if it was put there by mistake, maybe the factory was going to put a reverse gear and later abandoned that idea?anyway take a look at another motor,I think the 3 has the same part. How is this sopposed to work, not a big deal,I was just curious.Part has no point "dead weight"I may just remove it "weight reduction",but I'll just leave the part were the locking pin braces against.I doupt I'm missing a part, but check it out for me,thanks

Re: 1.75 gamefisher, what the heck does this do

Sure mrcrabs, only draw back is it getting it wet causing an air restriction, thats why I'm looking for a tachometer, for now I can tell by listening to her rpm's,this hasn't happened yet,but one day I was getting alot of spray,so I put my ball cap over it,later extended the rain guard"it folds down more if needed"I'm not worried about oil residue, not to bragg, but my motor is way to clean for that issue,.Filter has virtually no air restriction,I tested it by taking a few breaths through it,I was surprised I felt no restriction,I noticed the bigger the filter the less restriction)

Re: 1.75 gamefisher, what the heck does this do

The mesh screen,yes...funny I did this to my first 1.75,ya the one I burned up:facepalm:....I put the mesh screen on this one,but wanted to improve as we normally do as we get older,I got this cheap Fram filter just to, you know give it a try.I'm just looking out for my motor,my theory is,I'm doing more good than harm while using the filter,I don't see it doing any harm, wouldn't you like to breath filtered air for the rest of your life, pros and cons, pros, removes harmfull contaminates, avoids excessive wear, allows for optimal performance, cons, will get restricted if wet,,can't see anything else wrong with it,its worth it to me ,gives me a peace of mind,if I have to take it off,it just slides off.Paulpro is known to influence others lives.P.S. motor runs the same with filter, cell gps still reads 5.75mph on average, next time your at wallmart pick one up and test it yourself, its a ch10358 extra guard,I did this to help others, but mostly to improve on myself, not to let it be my downfall.I've tested it with several outings, mostly bay,O'also, filter should pick up any salt and moisture in the air from getting in the engine,Paulpro knows boating like Bo knows baseball,Paulpro believes every engine should have an airfilter,I believe most don't only because there isn't much room for it inside the engine cover, but since the aircooled models only have half a cowling,we can get away with it,thanks for putting up with my opinions,if only one person agrees with one thing I said, well only then can I find peace, god bless:)

Re: 1.75 gamefisher, what the heck does this do

speaking of filters, mine has a fuel petcock bowl, but its empty,I put a magnet wrapped tightly inside a spring, you know to pick up any metals.question...,is there a special mesh for gas or an element that I can put inside, wrap it in a spirral,or fold up and put inside the bowl, something that will act as a fuel filter,I really would like to further upgrade the care we could put into these motors,if we put our minds together we can solve, even the greatest mysteries in life:eek:Your opinions matter to me,only once Paulpro approve :D he-he well take care ,good day folks

P.P I use a cheap aftermarket crome cone type filter that you normally would oil...like a K & N , poke a few hole here and there where it can't be seen and presto you have a hot rod Tanaka that can breath and you have water intusion protection...looks good works good .

P.P I'm kind of afraid to read all of your posts....I think your trying to steal my brain....bit by tiny bit....and I don't have much left:eek:

To all, "Happy gobble gobble" Paulpro knows boating like Bo knows baseball.. P.S. I made the two holes in the exhaust "near water line" bigger 1/4 " the motor has better pick up out of the hole, plus its not much louder,I feel it helps the exhaust fumes get out quicker making it more responsive;) .... the end is almost near....

Mine looks something like this but I think it has chrome supports coming down from top to bottom, the filter material is so porous that a hole here and there is more than plenty....shop around, theres others colors amid makers, I just grabbed this ebay sale to show you.....I just got back from PT and my arse's is whipped and I got to ice it all down. I have so many projects that I'm behind on I may never get to them alll....

To all my frinds its getting slowly better but last night a bout mid night instead of medication I had the wife rube my leg down with good old vicks vapor rub, bingo pains a drift and I'm back to sleep

Best regards, grumpy

You are very fortunate ,I wish also to one day have a woman rub my leg:),I have my motor for now and soon another, they will never talk back and I can always count on them to get me from here to there:D, Hey grummpy,I almost forgot, along with my other mods,I'm looking for something for electrolyses,I go in the bay,not too salty, but yet I guess its worth it?Question, are there any small alloys for my 1.75,or do I need to cut off a piece of a larger one, whats your thoughts on this, this info will help me further to get inside your head;)P.S,with this new motor maybe I can find out if I'm missing a part on the tilt, this one looks complete, mine didn't even come with the rubber part on the intake.

Re: 1.75 gamefisher, what the heck does this do

Well I got my motor today, the intake piece was broken, it does have the hose though, couple cracks on the shell, it looks nice though.Problem.... looks like carb is gunked,it fired after I put gas in cylinder,I had to put my sparkplug, cause the one it came with was wrong, would'nt even snap on,gear oil looked clean like they changed it?I heard marine degreaser for cleaning carb?I can take it off,I even took of the throttle cable from carb, but I 've never opened one up,I cleaned the pin that goes up and down into the bowl and nothing:redface: Please help me:( P.S,I have another identical motor....I can swap some parts out,it can't possibly be the kill switch could it

Re: 1.75 gamefisher, what the heck does this do

hmmmm i thought that's what it could have been if it wasn't the spark plug. So it didn't fire
up with the correct spark plug but did fire up when you put the fuel oil mix directly into the
cylinder? yup sounds like a gunked up carb. Since you mentioned the previous owner hadn't
fired it up in a year I figured he may have not ran it completely out of fuel and it may have just sat there over time and accumulated carbon deposits in the carb. At least it's cranking and has compression, then everything else is minor. The next step would be to take apart the carb and clean it and if that doesn't do it at least you can cross that out as a possible issue. When I had my 4 hp merc the carb was gunked from adding too much oil to the fuel. My motor was at least able to fire but would shut off when I would try to give it gas, the gunked carb wasn't allowing enough fuel to pass and would result in the motor shuttin off, I used sea foam spray to clean my carb by spraying it directly into the carb air intake, however the motor must be on for this method. Hopefuly someone can give you directions on how to open up and clean it up, if not my mechanic can do that with his eyes closed as he did for the "old man".

LMAO , I hope mine don't do that cause I have oiled my muffler bearing up really good and I have the dual flow double halfback cut ins....they work well with the pop 4 I installed last year. My dad had one with a drip-O-matic and it never gave him problems.

P.P is this the motor that you got that was brand new NOS never used with rusty gears, that I told you to try and get your money back?? well if it is don't say I didn't warn you, every thing that gliters is not gold.

agree with SS,looks like a tilt lock but can't tell for sure.

The new motor I got came complet even with the ruber hose to intake, but it came seperate,it camein the box too,but it had been broken off:eek:,O'well l guess I'll add an airfilter to mach the other motor:rolleyes:,after all they are identical twinns even have same model# The new motor has the same parts for trim,I guess it is useless.I'm gonna remove it and just leeve the stainless steel piece that rest against the bracket,"where the pin pushes against" I'm sticking with my piece of wood for the tilt...The carb was blocked from fuel bowl up to needle,I passed a wire through, easy fix, plus my first attempt ever to work on a carb, lol

Re: 1.75 gamefisher, what the heck does this do

I just got back from Orlando with that same motor runs like a champ.Every thing I said was true,I told you I'll post through thick and thin,my first motor fixed its self remeber, the dry bearing sound went away after 3 days, and prop freed up when I gave it full throttle lol, thats how amazing these motors are.I just got another motor to run twinns, seller said it ran last year,it had a different spark plug,I installed a split fire I found for now.Worst of all was the carb, but I got it,it was under the needle leading to the bowl thats were the gunk was,I ungunkedit:p,here is a pic again of both motors one at home, the other from add,but its in the shed now for misbehaving:eek:I want to work on the transom but its my mother b-day,plus today is also the re b-day of my twinn gamefisher 1.75's,they've been apart for 25 years,I need to also fix the broken plastic intake piece for carb ,plus my spare prop arrived today, just last min preperations before my solo run .P.S.,I should try the new motor first, but O'well thats why I have two,N.A.S.A. system;)TO ALL ,get well,if not better..

Sillybuns also quoted"At least it's cranking and has compression, then everything else is minor." Just cause its cranking doesn't mean it has compresion "Paul pro never be fooled by a fool"
