Hi all,

I have a 115 merc inline 6 cylinder outboard. I removed the lower unit to inspect the impeller since i had no water coming out of the ext hole right below the powerhead. I assume it had something clogging it because the impeller looks great & the engine never overheated.

My problem now is that when I was removing the lower unit there was a 1/8" rubber line that comes out the top front of the lower unit. Anyone know what this is for? I can't seem to find what it was for in my manual. I also can't figure out what year motor it is....I know its older by the design of it. Maybe '84ish?

Any ideas???

It's the pickup tube for your spedometer.

That tube is a water pickup for a connection to a speedometer. If not used you can either unscrew it from the fitting in the lower unit (plug the port afterwards) or just leave it as is.

As for the waterpump impeller, I would go ahead and change it out since its already apart. It's a cheap part and easy to do.

Post the S/N of the motor to determine the year. Should be a name plate on the front of the transom clamp tilt tube.
