I read a great article while waiting in my doctors office one morning; it listed the authors 10 favorite bass lures... I wish I had kept that article because I hadn't heard of any of them.

So I bring my quest here... I want to know what the best bass lures out there are. I'm stuck using only a couple... want to know what everyone else likes!
I'm fairly new to bass fishing, got "hooked" recently when I pulled in a 6 pounder on a plastic worm, broke my rod too. Wow! Haven't felt a rush of emotions like that since the first time..., well, you get the picture.

Question: If you could only fish (for largemouth bass) with only 10 lures for the rest of your life, what would they be?

Thanks for the help!!!

Re: 10 best bass lures

About 30-35 years ago we were on vacation in the town of Perth Ontarion at Cristie Lake. My mom went to the store and bought my old man some cheap lures something like 2-3 for a buck. One of the lures she bought was a Cotton Cordell Redfin Mullet. It was a straight plastic stick bait lure that had a base color of yellow with red gills and a few light green stripes down the side of the lure. It was about 4 inches long, floated, and has 3 treble hooks on it. My old man scolded my mom for wasting money on these cheap lures that would never work.

After using the lure we went to the store and bought them out. We had supplies for several years and were never let down by the lures performance. It outperformed any and all other lures and was soon nicknamed simply The Bass Killer. The problem is it was so hot the screw that held in the eye would give out after a while. The glues for plactics were lousy 35 years ago so over the years the family supply dwindled down to one. The lure was so hot we had to take turns fishing with it because whoever had it would catch 5-6 fish for every one any other lure would catch.

We don't have anything left and have tried over the years to take some other colors to try to duplicate it but never succeeded.

The old man apologized many times over the years for scloding mom about buying lures and usually took her with him hoping for her to eye the next hot lure, but nothing ever worked as good.

The other lure I would list would have to be a senco worm rigged wacky style.

Re: 10 best bass lures

i live in south florida but have bass fished all over florida and georgia. in my experience, my top 3 favorite lures would have to be "shad assassin" type jerk worms in the colors: plain old white, watermelon seed, and i think its called arkansas shiner... kinda greenish silver, natural looking.
#4 june bug color curly tail worm rigged texas or carolina
#5 "tiki stick" style sinking straight worm, dark blue/black rigged texas or wacky
#6 pumpkinseed with chartreuse tail curly tail worm rigged texas or carolina
#7 small inline spinnerbaits
#8 buzz baits, white, or chartreuse/white
#9 small suspending rapala or similar lure in any natural color
#10 its a tie between a small popper or a torpedo

in the orlando area my go-to colors for plastic worms are white, or very dark like june bug or blue/black. in the spring, early summer white spinnerbaits ran deep worked good for me in a couple lakes there.

Re: 10 best bass lures

Well, I don't prefer lures because they are the most successful. I prefer them because they are the most fun to catch bass on, and I actually prefer smallys to bucketmouths.

#1. Flyrod hula popper.
#2. Weedless bass popper
#3. 2" Mister Twister, Texas rigged, on a flyrod.
#4. 5S floating Rapala
#5. Spinnerbait, silver/black
#6. Esox Doom (homemade customized #5 Mepps)silver/black
#7. Bagley DDKB2 in Fire Tiger
#8. Bagley DB6 in FLR
#9. Jitterbug, frog pattern
#10. 18S floating Rapala

My #1: 13 G floating Rapala cast and retrieved or trolled.
In no particular order:
Jitterbug or Hula Popper during flat light.
I don't use a lot of "Plastics" but I know guys who do real well on them.
1/4 or 1/8 ounce jigs with crawler.
For pure fun on freshwater I don't think anything beats a Smallmouth.

You guys better do some experimenting with the Rapala shallow X-Rap slash-bait.....I've never seen anything pull fish like this. Slash baits are worked similar to walkin' the dog only slower and sub-surface....deadly.

Re: 10 best bass lures

I think a lot depends on what part of the country you fish. Kinda tuff to pick ten, seems like a lot of favorites but here are some that I use.

#1 would be soft jigs of all types. The Winco smallie crawlie is the top, along with tube jigs, creature jigs, and so on.
#2 would be hard jig s with a pig or craw trailer.
#3 Top water stick type bait Zara spook, lucky craft sammy
#4 suspending jerk bait, particularly deadly in fall cold water
#5 jointed rapala minnow, fire tiger
#6 spinner bait double willow leaf in white or black
#7 Blade bait, again good for cold water bass, silver buddy
#8 Hate to say it but a stick type worm, Senko
#8 drop shot rig with a "Tiki drop" worm or a finesse worm
#9 Swim bait, Storm wild eye in perch, wont catch many but they will catch bigguns
#10 Shaky head set up. jig head with the screw type fastener

Re: 10 best bass lures

Can't say for sure, as I am not yet a very versatile fisherman - I am not fluent with many patterns. But so far,
1. Lucky Craft Pointer 112, in the foggy white color (can't remember name)
2. Rapala X-rap in Ghost Glass color.
3. 6 inch YUM houdini worm on a 3/0 Gammy EWG, Green pumpkin flavor.
4. Black and blue jig - haven't yet tried enough companies to see which I like best.
5. Lucky Craft Sammy, in aurora black.
6. Some sort of inline spinner (Can't believe no one mentioned it, but even I find myself forgetting to put them in the boat)
7. Topwater Spro Frog (haven't been very successful with these, as we have very little in the way of underwater vegetation, but as JB pointed out, they are fun to catch fish on)
8. Firetiger spinnerbait. Never caught a fish on one of these, but love to throw them.
9. White lead Spoon. (jigging spoons not trolling spoons)
10. Black buzzbait.

You should really cut my list off at 5. From 6 on, I am basically just filling in the empty slots. Also, see crankbait is not listed anywhere? I am not a very versatile fisherman.

Re: 10 best bass lures

Haven't fished for bass in FL. yet, but I used to tournament fish throughout the upper midwest, and still manage to fish in a league once a week. LM up to 7 lbs. and SM up to 6 lbs. are considered trophy class in this area. Here are my favorites in order :

1. TSB (Tom's secret bait) - hand poured 3-3/4" black reaper on 1/8 oz. spider slider head.
2. 6" Senko on Gamakatsu offset shank 4/0 hook.
3. 1/4 oz. blk/blu/purple jig and pig (#11 black pork frog)
4. Same in Watemelonseed / Green flake (#11 brown pork frog)
5. 5" Skirted grub in Rootbeer / red or green flake on 1/4 oz. Spider Wide Gap head.
6. 3/8 oz. Tandem willow spinnerbait in white or chartreuse.
7. Norman DD-14 crankbait in Sun Chartreuse / Blue.
8. Chugbug or Skitter Pop- any color w/ red on belly
9. Black MossBoss
10. 3/8 oz. Black Buzzbait

I've got a sneaking suspicion that the FL. strain LM would probably laugh at any of this selection.....

Re: 10 best bass lures

Don't need 10- only need 1.

SFC Original Floating Rapala- (Silver Flourescent Chartreuse)

simg_t_m20033715372003371537jpg175.jpg

Either a 1-1/2" or 2" will do. Anything larger, and it's hard to work on the surface as they take too long to come back up. It's like working a surface fly rod.

I can bring them in, walk them in, or just play with them on the surface. From 6:00-dark they're deadly, and have been for about 12 years now. I carry out a giant tackle box, and always end up using my SFC. Nice thing is, in between the bass, they'll pick up nice Crappies, 'Gills, Rock Bass, and Pike too. I have some with larger hooks, and I just love these things. For some reason, this color always works, even when the regular silver, gold, blue, or print ones won't.

I rarely come in without some dinner.

Heck- in the middle of the 4th of July parade yesterday: (Ha ha!)

Re: 10 best bass lures

worms always seem to work good especially in heat of the after noon . found that the action of crank baits are far more important than colors. I've had great acting baits with no paint left, still catch fish!no matter what brand. but we all have favorites . which make you throw with more confidence and experience, results in more hook ups.its good to have this listing to see which lure s can be more productive.

Skitter pops
Hulla pops
Jiggy pops
King Rat in the slop
Moss Mouse in the slop
Black lizard with a yellow tail Carolina rigged when the going is tough always produces!

I love top water... nothing like it to get the heart rate pumping when they hammer it.

On a side note; always wanted to go to Brazil on the Rio Negro to go top water after the Peacock Bass... that just looks absolutely sick!!!

Re: 10 best bass lures

I fall into the "not very versatile" fisherman category too... mostly because I'm so darn broke! My best luck comes around heavy top cover, cat-tails or moss, dropping brown pumpkinseed tubes on 1/4oz. jigheads... usually I know within 5 seconds (or instantly) if there's a fish in there. I drop into the smallest holes I can fit in the largest cover I can find. Usually golf ball sized holes in moss that spans a few feet at least.

Crankbaits I have luck on in shallow water, but I suck at fishing them around cover.... always snagged!

Plastics I used to do well on, weedless and weightless. Used to love watchign the line go from slack to taught little by little then making the big hook set.

Going pond fishing, maybe hit a small lake from the shore this weekend. This time of year (I'm in Maryland/PA area) in the dead of a sunny 90* day... what's good from the shore in shallow water?

Re: 10 best bass lures

Well from my experience...... Lets see.

I have had luck on the following
1. yellow rooster tails (medium size to large size)

2. Red Gold and white popper Heddon Chugger Spook.

3. This one hurts I broke mine can't find another. Medium runner crank bait, yellow, with red gills and black on the back.

4. Heddon Babby Torpedo green back with silver belly

5. Excalibur Spit N Image Bill Dance signature, almost like a spook which I witnessed that it also does pretty good.

6. My homemade jitter bug has proved to me that it is going to be a good one, large body with red head and white through out with black dots.
