Afternoon,

I have a 1970 25 hp Johnson on a homebuilt flat bottom skiff, approximate weight 350-400 lbs. With me in it (225 lbs) I have seen a max of 20 mph. When I have anyone else in the boat, the best I see is 16 mph.

I have the chance to get a 35 hp 1979 Johnson for a decent price and I have scanned craigslist for a long time and this is the first tiller model I have seen.

I think the weight difference between the two motors is approx. 40 lbs. Will I gain any speed by buying this motor? Do I buy or do you think I should be getting more speed from the 25 hp?

Thanks for any insight!

My 14' aluminum deep V weighs 400 lbs and I'm 200. My 25 2-stroke gives me about 26 mph. That's the max rated HP.

A 35 on that boat probably exceeds its capacity and could be dangerous. Regardless, your current motor isn't putting out all its capable of. First, check the wot rpm - maybe all you need another prop.

keep in mind that his homebuilt flatbottom may not perform as well as your boat with the same power
