I don't have my serial number guide with me today so I can't tell you by the serial number. However, the QD-23 was built in 1962. The last 10 hp was built in 1963. I'm assuming you got the model number wrong and you have a QD-23 not a OZ-23 (which doesn't exist as far as I know). I'll douby check the serial number in a couple days if someone else doesn't before then.

yes the number can be wrong the owner of the motor read it over the phone to me and did say the engine hasn't been run since around the early 70's but is not sized and ran before being put into storage in his fathers basement. I am buying the engine this weekend and will see the numbers myself Thanks Bob

What condition is it in? does it turn over? How much are you paying for it?

the motor turns over, I am going to do a compression test before buying, and if they pass, spark can be worked on points and wires ain't much, if she ran before going into storage, I think I can get her up and running, and it's only $100.00 with fuel tank, only problem is getting parts for a motor 30 to 40 years old, well we will see what happens Thanks Bob

Parts are no problem, Bob. I'll bet you like your motor. It's 10times easier to find parts if you have the parts manual, though. I use laingsoutboards.com a lot and iboats when I can. You'll definitely need the part #'s for iboats.
Good luck with it,

Yeah, parts can still be gotten at most OMC dealers as well as aftermarket... And btw, it's almost 50 years old :) They're great running engines... as long as it has compression and comes with a tank, it's a great deal for $100. I could resell it for $400 here with no tank. I sold a couple of them last year for that price.

Assumming it's a QD-23, what would be the gass-oil mix on this motor? Attached are pictures of the motor.

Looks like a 1962 QD to me. Its 24:1. That's 1 quart of oil per 6 gallon tank.

I have a Merc that runs on 50:1. What happens to this Johnson if I try to run it from the same tank of gas at 50:1?

Thanks,

Tom

to run the engine I believe you can burn up the bearings with out proper oil amount other treads spoke about the type of bearings is why she needs that 24:1

I thought I read here on one of the threads that Johnson actually recomends 50:1 but most people use 24:1 on these motors. Can anyone confirm?

Nope. 24:1 for outboards earlier than 1965. Especially so in these 10 hp twins. There is a lot of misinformation out there.

A lot of people are fine with you running your older outboard on 50:1.
