My husband and I are trying to reset the recoil on his 1970-something MW Sea King. We're not sure how to set the tension. The spring works as well as everything else. We've concluded that there needs to be tension before the string is pulled. How we are to do that ?? We've taken the pin out and tightened from the screw at the top but for some reason this does not work. By the time we get the pin back in we have lost the tension somehow.

Re: 10 hp Sea King recoil help needed

I have had the same problem. What helped me was to switch the slotted screw vwith a phillips screw and install a jam nut under the screw so I could keep tension on the spring without the screw moving to release the tension. I also ground the tip of the pin slightly to make it easier to insert it in the shaft. I also found that the nylon bearing that supports the shaft is troublesome, you might want to check that out. perhaps it simply needs lube.

i did it by taking the handle off and wraping the cord , then putting it back in the motor winding it up then fishing it through the guides out through the case and putting the pull grip back on.
