1988 Evinrude 100, really hard to start. Prime the bulb, bring up the idle lever, turn the key and it will rev up and then die. It will do this 4 or 5 times, reving slightly longer each time, before it finally stays running. Any clue as to what it may be?

Also, its hard to stay running when it is trimmed way up (driving through shallow water). Not sure if the two are related.

Thoughts?

They actually can be related, sounds like you may have some carb work ahead of you, sticky floats can cause the very symptoms you described.

So under your best opinion would you say a complete carb rebuild would be in order?

It could be, but troubleshooting is the next step:

Check all lines, connectors for leaks, check your primer bulb, inspect the fuel pump and fuel solenoid.

Have the carbs recently been adjusted? Have they been done since you have owned the motor?

You could try using a carb cleaner in them before you opt for a rebuild as well, sometimes people get lucky and that is wnough and other times they dont.

Re: 100hp Evinrude hard start

Bought the boat from a dealership last year. They had it all serviced and checked over and it ran good. Not sure if they did anything with the carbs or not. Its always sort of had this problem, although this year it is a bit more difficult.

I do have a bottle of seafoam I've been trying to run through it but it hasn't helped. Maybe I'm not mixing it strong enough.

Thanks for the suggestions.
