My tilt and trim motor went out the other day. Is it ok if i remove tilt and trim unit completely and just use a rod to hold motor in place? I can load it on the trailer without moving motor. just thinking if i hit anything with it in the locked position it would be bad bad bad.

There is a manual bypass on the unit that will let you tilt the motor should be on the right side of the motor

That's the "trim" motor/piston assy (the big part of the pumping system located between the transom brackets of the main motor....the engine) when viewed from the rear. I don't remember if it's a partial turn, or functions like a low speed needle valve whereby several turns are required to open adequately to bypass the piston and allow for hand movement. Try it.....not that difficult.

I am sorry I should have asked which one you have need the serial #

Ha! Maybe I too should have asked. Did the Merc 1000 have PTT? I don't think it came out till the mid 70's and the 1000 was back in the mid '60's as I recall. I had a mid '70's 850 that had PTT but it was external occupying the shock absorber mounting positions of earlier models (probably the 1000 included) occupied by hydraulic pistons for the PTT system. Oh well, we're trying.
