1969 105hp chrysler

boat last on water/run 1991. i started it up and ran it probably 20 seconds 2 weeks ago to verify it ran. then i pulled the lower unit and replaced impeller - touched nothing else. put back together yesterday, got the prop in trashcan full of water, wouldnt start.

i had no spark at plugs so i went one step back in the system, i have no voltage at the coil with key in start or run positions. starter cranking fine but no fire.

i do have 12v at the belt driven distributor(magneto?).

where do i go from here?

Re: 105 chrysler - no spark or juice @ coil

is there a spec on the points anywhere online or does someone know what the correct gap is?

pulled the cap, points are barely opening. by barely i cant even see that there is a gap when they are supposed to open.

i fried the coil while jumping things trying to test stuff, so i purchased the CDI unit and replaced the whole factory ignition box/coil. via their troubleshooting directions i am left at "there is definitely a problem inside the distributor" since i have no spark.

Points simply signal the transistor to "dump" the capacitors inside the CD box into the coil. However, If they are not clean and gapped properly, they will not work.

Remove them from the distributor and clean them either with a points file (best) or fine sandpaper--NOT emery-- it is conductive and any residue may cause problems.

Install them and set to .010 at a high lobe.

Remember: there are TWO power sources for the CD box. You must have power to the CD box electronics in addition to power to the points coming off the blue terminal on the engine terminal block. ADDITIONALLY, there must be power to the capacitors inside the CD box attached to the RED terminal of the engine terminal board.

Point gap will affect timing so check that timing advance is still 30 or 32 degrees BTDC at wide open throttle. Originally your engine was timed at 32 but in later years Chrysler reduced timing to 30 to compensate for poor quality marine gas. Either setting is acceptable, especially if you use auto pump gas.

Re: 105 chrysler - no spark or juice @ coil

points cleaned and gapped, thanks for the spec on that frank.

fired right up. however, the chokes are wide open even trying to start, so it ran a bit rough until warmed up. anything to check for there? i tried tapping the choke actuator/motor and got no movement. one time last week when i was trying to start, the chokes snapped shut then opened back up. confirmed 12v with key on at the choke actuator.

the new impeller is pumping nicely and after 30 seconds or so the motor ran excellent. no noises, nice and quiet, responded well to throttle input. the choke should close some to warm the motor up though, even at 90* outside air temp like it was today, right? i mean, my car's choke works when it is hot out.

thanks for the help so far, i think once this choke thing is figured out it'll be time to get out on the water and see what happens.
