Did you change to a regular plug like the Evinrude QL 77---? Surface gap plugs will not fire reliably with a regular coil ignition.

I put the ngk b6h in it. I just found some that were the same depth as the original ones but it does it with those too

Are you starting it in fast idle position? You pull out the silver knob and advance the control handle as far as it will go. Leave it until the engine is warm then pull back to upright and push in the button for normal shifting. Are you pushing in and HOLDING in the key to choke it?

I was not advancing all the way so maybe that was the problem. Now i have to get the starter rebuilt, it quit working. Thanks for the tips. I will touch back when i get the starter replaced.

Did you add back a capacitor across the points if the original ignition did not have one? Are the points clean and set to .010? if not there may be not enough dwell to generate a reliable spark.

Hey Frank I thank you for your input on my motor. I installed the new starter and it fired right up. I took it to Kerr Lake and rode around for about two hours. It did fine but does not have as much power as i thought it would. I have it on a 1982 18' formula thunderbird. It only put out about 25 mph. Should i expect more than that? Or should i look for a bigger motor? I ordered an rpm gauge to see what it is running at wide open the one on the boat is not working.

Re: 105 chrysler outboard converted from cdi to standard coil having trouble running

The 105 was rated at the crank and in the early '80s when industry standard became rated at the prop Chrysler simply began calling it a 90. Not knowing the condition of the engine or the hull I would go out on a limb and say on an 18 foot boat 25 might be a tad slow. You could experiment with props and engine height, possibly getting a bit more speed but certainly I would not expect 30 or more, especially since (I believe) T birds are heavy hulls. A larger horsepower engine may satisfy you more.

Thats what i figured, thanks for the input. I guess i will start hunting a bigger motor. Meanwhile i will just make it work the speed will be plenty for pullin the kids around on the tube. Thanks again Frank.
