Re: 105 Chrysler
First off, It is a fine engine, simple and easy to repair, and easy on the wallet. If it is in running condition you will most likely get good service from it. Chrysler engines have a bad reputation, so you should get a good deal on it. Obviously I can't quote a price because ultimately price depends on condition, sellers motivation to sell and your motivation to buy. However, I can say that for example, 1000 bucks would be way too much--even for an engine in excellent condition.
It does not use any automotive parts. Distributor, points, condenser--all are special marine units. Plugs are Champion L20V --new champion number 322. Fuel is 50-1 50 parts gasoline to 1 part TCW3 outboard oil. close approximation is 1 pint oil to 6 gallons gas--48-1. DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO USE AUTOMOTIVE OIL. These oils have additives that are harmful to outboard two cycle engines and damage can occur within use of the first several gallons of fuel mix.
Depending on the year, It may have a points signaled electronic ignition or an electronic eye signaled electronic ignition. The earliest engines have standard points and coil ignition, but I think this was before the '70s.
The model number and serial number will be inside the lower engine cover pan. It will be an aluminum plate about 1 inch by 3 inches below where the fuel line and cotnrol cables enter the engine. It will be similar to 1056H** The first three numbers indicate horsepower. If it does not have the "H" it is earlier than 1970. My model number is 1401H9A serial #1046
Your dealer will refuse to help you with parts--saying the records don't go back that far. However, parts are still available. All you need to do is to go to The Chrysler Crew website.
The major engine parts were never changed, so almost any year Chrysler or Force have interchangeable parts. Your main problem will be propellers. In the late '70s they changed to a 1 piece lower unit and changed the splines on the prop shaft. I don't think any of the big retailers sell props for that engine, but again, at the Chrysler Crew, you should be able to scratch up one. Very rarely, I see one come up for sale on ebay.
