Hi,

I thought id start a new thread for this. I'm currently rebuilding my outboard engine and want to replace the housing and impeller

The listed part for my engine is
#3085
1057HE
1973

which the impeller is spossed to look like this
3085.gif

The one installed looks like

#F438065-1 (for the 1974 model)

the old impeller fits snugly in the housing, I had my boat overheat on the weekend which could have been from leaning out, im not %100 sure. Could this have caused it?

what do you mean snugly..if the round boble bits on the end are worn its no good...some pumps were upgraded from 6 to 10 fin impellers ...who says the one you have in is the right one ??

The upgrade goes from 10 blades to the 6 blade. Is the diameter the same.
You said you replaced the housing.Did it come as a kit?Does it match the old housing?
Overheat due to a lean condition??Why do you think this happened?
If you overheated do a compression test.

Re: 1057HE Water pump kit

As long as they are both 3/4 inch high, either one is correct. The 12 vane model was replaced later with the six vane model. Because the six vane has less drag and also has more space between the vanes, it will consumea little less horsepower and also deliver just a fraction more water. Thus: it is actually preferable to use the six vane model.

The impeller sits in the housing offset and must be compressed slightly to get it in. Usually, if you lubricate it with soap and spin the driveshaft as you lower the pump, it will go right in.

If you overheated, the first suspect is the impeller so replace it whether or not you think it is worn. AND---as Fucawi said, if the tips are worn, the impeller is worn and useless.

Never said the impeller in my housing was the right one, just pulled it apart.

Higher AFR's will cause increased EGT's and will overheat a engine in no time. especially with a old cooling system that may have other problems
The tips have a little wear ont hem but not a substantial amount.

I will be replacing the housing and impeller when it goes back on. is there any variation in the housings between the sub 40hp housings and 105housings and or 73/74+ models?

i suspected the 6 vane would flow more than the 10 vane one.

I've also found pitting on my housing which would prevent a good seal. after removing the mid leg the seal also looks like its had better days.

It's probably a combination of all these things.

Re: 1057HE Water pump kit

55 HP and lower have smaller pumps. 70 through 150--yes, Chrysler did make a four cylinder 150--are the same pump and impeller. This pump/impeller was continued until 1978 when Chrysler introduced the one piece lower unit. Interestingly enough, the pump and impeller on these later lower units was 1/4 inch higher and the same diameter. They can not be swapped because the bolt pattern is different.

On these outboards, higher air/fuel ratios ie. lean runs, result in melted pistons at or near wide open throttle before the engine has a chance to overheat. You will just hear a rattling and the engine will slow or stop. it doesn't take very long.

And, uh, people---let's count them---it is a 12 vane impeller.

I ordered a new 6 vane impeller kit (housing included) as mine is corroded.
