10hp QD-21 driveshaft stuck in powerhead

Gentlemen,
I'd like to convert my QD-14 back to a short shaft, but have been unable to pull the driveshaft from the powerhead. I have separated the lower unit and have the powerhead off so I have access. I have tried soaking it in penetrating oil forever, exerting hammerblows to visegrips on the shaft (I don't need this driveshaft anymore), using high heat, and still the bugger is like it's welded in.

I've been told of people cutting off the shaft close to the powerhead and drilling and tapping a hole to use a bolt to pull out the stuck section, but wondered if there will be enough room to run the tap through far enough.

I also thought of cutting the shaft off in a similar fashion, and drilling a series of smaller holes along the diameter to cut the plug in half, so I could pinch together the halves and break them away from the socket. I figured this way I wouldn't have to tap any threads.

Also, is there a short driveshaft tube (the cover that connects the pump housing to the lower leg) to replace the 5" one that my motor had, or do you not use one on a short shaft?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks, 50's

P.S. A good thing is that the motor must have been extended from a short at one time 'cause it has the long shift connector.

Sorry, I also have a QD-14, but this question is about the 21. 50's

Hmmm... sounds like a bugger. Is it a salt water engine? This is one of the reasons to lightly lube the top of the driveshaft whenever re-installing (this is for others reading this)

If you do not need the driveshaft why not weld on something to it and then really hammer it? Probably not too good for the crankshaft though...

Have you sat the engine upside down and let oil soak in the joint? Have you tried pb blaster?

Forget about the drilling and tapping idea. The bolt you put in there will be nowhere near as strong as the shaft material now.

I suggest using the slider from a slide hammer puller, sliding it on the shaft. You may have to weld a nut on the shaft to have something for the slide hammer to bang against. You can probably rent a slide hammer puller (axle puller).

Thanks Steve and FR. I'm soaking the joint upside down in PB Blaster that I just picked up at NAPA (on sale). Tomorrow I'm going to support the end of the crank with a big washer over a loose vise, while I pound down on some visegrips clamped to the shaft. I'll let you know if I'm successful.

So, do you have the powerhead removed with the drive shaft stuck in it now? That's a pretty simple job for a hydraulic press to remove.

Whaddya mean what? Any machine shop will have the jigs to remove that with a press as long as you're willing to sacrifice the drive shaft.

Edit: Make that any good machine shop.

I would think that getting PB in the joint upside down should work as long as it has the time to soak.

Wasn't meaning to be disrespectful, just wondering what kind of setup they are going to use to pull with a hydraulic press which is generally used to push. Got a sketch? Never too old to learn something.

Success!

Thank you all for your input. With the help of another hobbyist who is also a mechanic, we finally extracted the long shaft. We figure the motor was lengthened early in its life, and whoever did it did not properly grease the upper end of the shaft. Then it sat for a long time before I got it. Anyway, with a special puller and a lot of heat, the bugger came out, groaning the whole way. The attempt with the PB Blaster was no doubt foiled by the o-ring on the shaft keeping the PB from propery saturating the area.

Now to find all the proper parts to complete the job. I'm looking forward to having this motor back in service again, as I enjoyed it for several years as a long shaft on another boat.

Happy Fall boating. 50's

FR, probably the easiest way to use the press is to drill a hole through the driveshaft big enough for a pin. Then you use a slotted sleeve (tube with slot cut through both sides) to drive the crank away from the shaft.

Sleeve the shaft, then stick the pin through and block the press up against the pin. The press drives the sleeve down, the pin is held firm and the pin is free to move in the slotted sleeve.

That's just one I can explain.
