Good Morning, Guys...

I have a 1986 Evinrude 110 mounted on a 17 Whaler Montauk 70's vintage hull.
The current prop is a 13 x 19 and then engine turns about 4600-4700 at WOT with just myself in the boat. with 2 people that drops to 4500 or so. I'm thinkning that i should switch to a 17 pitch, but would like to also consider a larger diameter prop as well. if i went up to 14" diameter, would a 15 pitch still get me up into the higher end of the WOT range? (4500-5500). Also, i'd really like to consider a stainless prop, do you have to make any adjustments for the weight of the stainless versus the aluminum? (decrease in pitch, ect?)

Thanks for any help.

You are well down in rpm. I would guess the 15 inch pitch would be the way to go for your setup. Don't go for the 14 inch diameter just because it will fit. The prop needs some clearance from the ventilation plate to work properly. 13 1/2 -13 3/4 is the max you want. I like stainless, it can be thinner alowing more efficent prop design. Weight is not an issue, yes, it acts as a bit of a flywheel but not measureable with out very sensitive instruments.

Are you sure the motor is running right? The tach set right?

A V4 on that boat should spin a 19 pretty easy. What's the set up like?

Re: 110 HP Evinrude Prop Questions

I have the engine set up off of the transom about 1/4 " or so, and it's not cavitating, and i'm running the pin in the 3rd hole up, i've changed it from the second after the first time out with this setup. the motor doesn't sound like it's missing at all, starts easily, and plugs all look like they're burning normally, the engins just seems boggy coming out of the hole, it turns around 3000 rpm or so until she starts to come up on step, but still tops out at 4600-4700. i do have a hull leak or 2,but store the boat in an aircraft hangar, and it's usually dry when i put it in the water.
the tach is brand new, plugged into the throttle commander, and set to 6 poles
i think the engine is idling at around 800 or so rpm

thanks for all the help so far,
Jeff.
p.s. thanks for the reply randy, i think i'll call the local prop guy today and see if he has some trial props.

That boat doesn't have a pad so it'll never get up on the pad. At speed though it will catch air and will have a lot of lift. Trust me on that one but it'll be somewhere after 50 mph.

Now, are you saying your motor does not have power trim?

No, it does not have power trim, it's an 1986 e110mlcdc.
i haven't tried the lower holes for the pin lately, mostly because smooth water
is pretty hard to find around here, and with the whaler's ride, i like to keep the bow up a little more.
