As some may have read, I am working on resolving a prop setup problem. In that quest I have been trying to find a few people who have the same boat/engine combination as I have. Another item that I believe would help is: Is a 2000 or later Johnson 90 hp 2 stroke comparable in power to the 2004 115 hp 4 stroke?

In my information search, I get the impression that it takes more 4 stroke hp rating for a given boat than the 2 stroke. Is it just too slight or is it significant?

It seems many run the 90 hp 2 stroke so with these answers I hope to increase my success of finding boat/engine combinations that may better instill confidence that the prop I buy is correct.

Thanks,
Andy

Re: 115 4 stroke = 90 2 stroke?

Both engines are rated with the same rules, Andy. The important differences are that the 115 4 stroke weighs about 100lb more than the 90 2 stroke and the 90 has more of its torque at low speed.

As a result, you might find that the same prop is correct for both.

Don't over analyze on paper. At the end of the day you will optimize your prop selection on the water watching your tachometer.
