I am having a 98 115 v4 rebuilt as we speak. I dont have a ton of knowledge on the whole process but here is my predicament:
2 cylinders were scored due to water getting in my vro tank. (tank will now be disconnected) Nonetheless, it is moving forward. I was quoted $2400 to complete the rebuild, but i just received the inevitable call of mor problems. I was told a cranksshaft journal was damaged and that plus a rod will need to be replaced. Tack on another $620 for a remanned one. Does this sound about right? Again, I've never rebuilt one and don't know how common this is. Someone try and help me feel better about this. My motor was shipped out of state and i cant see the damage. Thanks guys.

You are getting close to the point where you could have replaced the powerhead, new. I think you might need legal advice at this point. Are they committed to rebuilding the carburetors, etc., or is this just a short block job?

Check it out: http://www.boatmotors.com/motorparts/

Yes they are rebuilding the carbs. I sent them the entire outboard. They are disassembling and reassembling with a warranty. Check the site: outboardrebuild.com

OK, so lets get this right, the rebuilders gave you a "quote" without seeing the Engine?, or gave you a quote without properly dismantling and checking what was needed? or just gave you a price that it could cost $X? if yes to any of those, I would be a tad wary of their ethics and also, what happens if you get it done and it needs some Warranty work, do you remove it from your Boat and pack it off to them? that in itself would be a Major concern to me, the prices quoted may well be perfectly OK, but you are still dealing with someone "over the phone" and indeed a new powerhead could be purchased for the same price (or there abouts)

OH, and also why are you disconnecting the Oil system? on their advice or just something you think is a good idea?

I had a mechanic here in town dismantle the engine and identify the problem. The quote from the other rebuilder was after the local mechanic quoted $200 bucks more and none of the warranty.
As far as the vro, I've discussed this with a number of mechanics as well as reading many opinions on this forum. What is your opinion?

So you had a local guy take the motor apart before you shipped it off. I sure would have thought you'd have seen a bad rod journal.

As for a VRO on a 1998 motor - that motor doesn't have a VRO. It has the OMS system and I sure wouldn't disconnect it. Truthfully, water getting in the tank is a lack of maintenance deal. The pump will (obviously) pump whatever liquid you allow in the tank.

Regardless, if you or the guy who tore it down didn't see any crank / rod damage I'd sure feel funny about it.

Re: 115 crankshaft journal

sorry as i have not been as clear as possible. A local mechanic tore it down as far as identifying a need for rebuilding due to the cylinder scoring. He is semi retired and works on a few motors to keep busy. He had the block stripped down to the point of two mounting bolts broke due to this being a saltwater motor. He didn't have a plasma cutter or a better means of cutting a lower motor mount to remove a bolt and after that plus no legal warranty, I decided to shop around. I did a lot of research before concluding to send the motor to Florida. The best decision? We'll see. They did offer a substantial warranty. I posted a question here for suggestions of a good rebuilder and I didnt get responses on that so I did the best I could. Long story short, I didnt see the crankshaft, but I wasnt aware machining it wasnt included in a rebuild. My mistake for not researching that. As far as the oil pump, I guess I have been misinformed, but 90% of mechanics I have spoken to say disconnect the system if the boat is out of warranty and you'll never worry about no oil in the system.
I'm still on a learning curve.

that was what I was getting at, the Oil system on that Motor will go for years with fairly minor maintenance, and anyone quoting on a full rebuild would surely see or at the very least check the crank, I would still be a little suspicious, but unless you do a trip and see for yourself, then you really have no option but to pay, or collect the Motor and pay for anytime they may charge for any work they have completed to date! pretty tricky situation really.

with that said, does 3g sound fair for rebuild, water pump, crankshaft?

That a pretty good price as a reman I sell with 1 year warranty(shortblock) would run you about 2200.00+ shipping.:)
