i somehow lost the screw cap on my trim/tilt fluid cylinder on my 1988 evinrude 115. The system took in sea water before i realized the problem. Now the trim/tilt is not moving. can still hear the motor running. I took off the curly line at the bottom of the motor and blew compressed air thru the fill hole and blew a bunch of water and milky dextron 3. Then i filled the system and blew it thru again, and again, and again untill i was blowing straight ATF fluid. still no trim/tilt. I have a feeling that i didnt purge the whole system and the main cylinder has water in it. my fear is that i have to take the system out to get all the water out!! Does anyone know any way to drain the whole system (with out removing it)?

Re: 115 evinrude trim disaster

i've only ever done what you describe to flush water out of trims
note we are in fresh water not salt
did you try the manual release valve to be sure its tight?
try backing it out 1 turn run trim briefly and re-tighten
the only other time i had a problem with a trim unit i put 30 psi in the fill hole to force oil into pump but that was 0n a 1977 modle and i haven't done it since
good luck

Are you sure you have enough TNT fluid in the system for it to operate? Takes at least two 11oz tubes to fill that system. The correct level is even with the fill hole with the engine tilted all the way up. If you can get it to run a little, even with help, run it all the way up. Top off the reservoir and cyle up and down 3 or 4 times...help it if you have to. Check the level again and repeat the cycling up and down. Always check the reservoir level with the engine all the way up. Cycling up and down fills the system while bleeding the air out. I'll leave the fill plug a little lose to let the air escape......little messy but it helps.

As mm1 posted, you can apply air to the reservoir to force the fluid through the system. Should only take 7 to 12 psi. But if you use the correct procedure for filling, most times it'll be ok.

Unfortunately water is heavier than oil, meaning that the water will be at the lowest point in that unit. You can try removing the manual release valve and the one large valve that you can see on the rear port side of the unit, then manually lift and lower the engine. Not a sure cure but worth a try.

Removing the manual release valve..... remove the retaining snap ring first, then simply back the valve out.

The alternative is to remove and dismantle the entire unit for proper cleaning. Hopefully you'll get lucky.

Re: 115 evinrude trim disaster

thanks for all the advice guys, but it looks like the motor is coming off :( i think it just got too much water in it. and i know everyday longer i wait the more that salt water is tearing it up.... rebuild time? oh well.. it will give me a chance to put on my new stainless steel transom plate.

thanks again
