I have a 2001 115 hp mercury 4 stroke, model # 115elpt4s, serial# ot389155,6000 max rpm, it is on a 19 ft seamaster. I bought the boat and motor used in January 2005. When I first took the boat out it made 5000+ rpm but ran a little rough. So... I replaced the spark plugs, changed the oil and filter, inspected the fuel filter element, changed the fuel/water separator, changed the lower end oil.
I then took the boat out to check it out. It ran fine at first then started to run poorly. It started to loose rpm's and started to miss and run rough.
Three months later, three trips to the repair shop later, and a change in prop pitch from aluminum 19 pitch to ss 17 pitch, I have a motor that occasionally runs rough and will NOT make over 5000 rpm. usually 4700 to 4800 rpm. The repair shop does not know much about these new fangled 4 strokes but he says he has run all of the diagnostics and everything is up to spec. Any Ideas?

Re: 115 hp 4 stroke power loss

Welcome to iboats. :)

If the motor checks out okay, I'd start looking at the fuel supply. Specifically for restrictions in the fuel line like kinks or leaks. The pick-up in the tank could be clogged, the antisyphon valve may be sticky.

Now for the weird one. If you have one of those cheesy crappy they-shouldn't-be-allowed-to-make-them aftermarket fuel lines, Junk it and get a fatcory fuel line. Especially the primer bulb. There isn't an aftermarket primer bulb I'd sell to my worst enemy. They're ALL crap! Johnnyrude, Merc, and Yamaha all have good primer bulbs. Attwood, Sierra, Tempo, etc. primer bulbs ARE ALL CRAP!!!

Also, make sure the primer bulb hoses aren't clamped with those common screw-type metal clamps. Those must only be used when the thing you're clamping to is metal. They warp the nipples on plastic connectors and since the primer bulb check valves are there, they can really mess with the function of those check valves.

Thank you, that is one of the things that I have not thought of. I will try a portable tank and different fuel line then work backward.

On the subject of the hose clamps, what do you recomend, that can be found easily?

Re: 115 hp 4 stroke power loss

if you cut a band type clamp on the high pressure part of the fuel line it must be replaced by an identical type and installed with the proper tool. the part numbers for the tool are in the merc 115 fourstroke manual.
seems ya got monkys in tech suits. that system is usually easy to test.
most test can be done with standard EFI test equipment. if the lap top or diagnostic lamp show no codes its most likly clogged injector screens or a clogged VST filter.
its a basic EFI with few sensors. its incredibly easy to test. if you suspect clogged injectors then run it with a test wheel, find or borrow a yamaha part#yb1624, and run it to the missing range and spray fuel down each throttle body. or talk to a good yamaha dealer. its a yamaha with a black dress on. but there is nothing new fangled on it, all the technology is at least 20 years old.
purchase a copy of manual part number90-881980. its actually a lot better than the yamaha manual. it describes how and why most all of it works. and it shows how to make and use a diagnostic lamp with a simple 12v lamp.the lamp will blink any trouble codes.

if no codes are set you know what part not to test and what part to test. just remember that fuel system mechanical functions are not monitored. only thing the computer looks for is are the electrical circuits complete. does not look for clogged filters in the injectors or any other place

Great advice, Thank you, I will have some time this weekend to tr out these ideas.

Some points of clarification.

Re manual 90-881980 is it a mercury or yamaha, or other?

Re hose clamps, right now I have a screw type, non oem clamp, on the fuel primer bulb.(low pressure) what should it be replaced with.

Hello Waltergs,
I'm not here to open old wounds with your problems you've been having. Just maybe a hopeful answer to your adventure. I too have a Merc. 115hp 4 stroke efi.A 2005 model. I have the exact problems as you stated. My problems started in the summer of 2009. Can you be specific on your fix or fixes. My motor like others have staed runs great with water muffs on in my drive-way. I have heard all the possible problems....vst box/ Hp fuel pump or filter, the trigger, the coil, the poor FACTORY fuel lines.Bla...bla...bla. I would just like to know what YOUR out-come was.
One guy had this same problem.....spent a BUTT LOAD of time and MONEY at the "so called" Marine mechanic...all for NOT. Problem was not fixed by them. IT WAS FIXED when another iboats member wrote in his own fix.....The THERMOSTAT. He said he replaced, cleaned or repaired almost everything else. NO CHANGE. Until listened to someone else.....and a unlikely fix.
Thanks Shadowcrest5
