I had my boat out for a run last night and it started fine as it had for the last dozen times I had it out this season. Once it was warmed up I opened the throttle and it accelerated up to WOT about 5500 and then started to jolt and sputter and then died. It seemed to power up momentarily and then it would lose power. It was also smoking badly and the color of the smoke was darker than normal. I was able to get it started again and it would idle but as soon as I put it in gear it would die.
What I did check while it was idling was the primer bulb and it stayed hard.
Here's what I think I need to do next after reading many posts from this forum:
-check compression on each cylinder
-check for spark at each cylinder
-check condition of spark plugs ie)fouling, metal , etc.
Is there anything else I should check at this stage?
I changed the water pump at the beginning of the season.
Thanks
