hi,

first of all im new to this forum. i live in montreal, canada. so hi to all And please forgive my typo im french and english is not my primary langage

my problem is that this week end i put my boat to water, the engine is a 1981 1150 mercury inline 6, it's a boat i just bought, i have no experience with this boat or any other boat by the way. i know what i know from my researsh on internet. so, i try starting the motor and i take a good 5 to 10 minute of intermitent try to have it to slowly start.

i let it run 3 minutes then i notice that there was no water coming from the pee hole, instead there was a mix of steam and exhaust fume. Can that be the water pump? im affraid i didn't do a good job winterizing the foot. in fact i did nothing for the foot because local marina told me the water completly goes out of the foot when it stored verticaly.

if it's the water pump, how dificult can that be to rebuilt it ? how long does it take to remove the pump and rebuilt it?

another thing is my tilt, it work, but when i accelerate it seem to go down by itself. after that there was missing oil in the tilt pump.

any advice would be a great help

yes, most likely your impellor is shot in the pump. its not too hard to change yourself and way cheaper than the shop. if you read a bunch of threads here over the last couple weeks you'll find a lot of directions in doing it yourself. A mamual will guide you in this, the mercury manual will be the best. I'm not familiar with the tilt trim, others should help you and the manual will give you trouble shooting. for winter storage, make sure the motor is verticle so all water drains or it will freeze and split the case. hard starting most likely from old gas in carbs varnishing and gumming up.

if you've done it before, about an hour. if you haven't done it before , 2 to 5. there arn't any special tools requiered, just wrenchs and a screwdriver. thats if everything comes apart smooth, sometimes they can be stubborn. a manual really does help, especially the diagramns.

do you think the exhaust fume from the pee hole is normal? that what make me the more nervous. i hope the foot as no crack in it. i wonder i maybe some water left in the foot might have done damage?

usually its steam. if u haven't run it long enough to do that then yes it could be exaust. water flows back out into exhaust so no water, it could go other way. seals on water pump could be leaking and sucking it up there too. better to get water pump kit with gaskets than just the impellor. if the lower leg were damaged from ice you will know for sure when you open it up. you would probably be leaking out your gear lube if so too. another important thing to change before winter and to check in the spring.
