Can anyone give me a rough estimate of what I should expect to pay for a 1984-115hp Johnson outboard motor which runs well and is in good condition. Thanks!

is it a freshwater motor or saltwater motor.

saltwater motors that age usualy have some corosion inside the block that might become a problem.

so that you should into consideration.

if its in good shape and the motor looks clean and well taken care of may be 1000 dollars.

Motors are usually priced differwent in different areas.

Shop around, craiglist, local newspaper and see what the going prices are for your area.

I have picked up some older V-4 for next to nothing, but they needed work.

Ask the owner when was the last time carbs were serviced, rebuilt? Last time water pump serviced? Does the tilt n trim work? Does the remote control come with it? When was it last de-carbed? when was the lower unit last serviced, sealed, pressure checked, lube changed?

All this is factored in to price of used motor, if the owner has not done any of the above, then this will most likely be additional cost to you after the purchase. If you have a mechanic or marina do all of the above, figure that in to your total cost also for labor.

Agreed. Down here in So.Fla, prices are high. A good running 1980's V-4 can sell for as much as $2500

Re: 115 hp Johnson purchase

I have shopped around here in central FL, the newspaper, local papers, and even ebay. Have gotten running V-4 for $350, and ones that need ignition work but good compression for as low as $150.
I was not in a hurry and spent alot of time researching..

I usually find it is less expensive to buy a whole boat with the motor and trailer than just a motor alone, dont know why but it sems that way.

whatever you go to purchase just make sure you do all the inspections, compression, spark, check the lu lube for water, and if it is still on the boat take it for a test drive, I mean DRIVE it like you stole it and see how it does.

the old crossflows and loopers are dependable as they get if they are maintained, but they like to drink gas, LOTS OF GAS,
good luck on whatever you purchase and any questions just come back to the forum and I am sure someone will assist you.

sometimes if you have the time it is worth the savings to drive to another location to buy an engine, just be prepared to walk away from it if it does not check out good and consider the few hours driving to look at it.
