I have a 1987 Mercury inline 6 and I started noticing that voltage gauge in my dash was peged out at 16 volts. Then I notice on my depth finder that it was reading nearly 17 volts. I done a search on iboats and noticed that people were saying that these older mercs would put out high voltage so I kind of ignored the high voltage. well to make a long story short, a fried depth finder and two new batteries later I decided that nearly 17 volts was just to much. I checked the rectifier and it checked out ok. Then I checked the charging side of the stator and my ohm reading on the wires coming to the stator was 1.1 and my clymer repair manual said that it had to be below 1. So I disconnected the wires coming from the stator to the rectifier and taped them up so I could still use my boat till i could afford to get a new stator. Also I checked the ohm reading on the wires coming from the stator to the switch boxes and they checked out ok. Now due to the fact that I disconnected the two yelow wires coming from the stator to the rectifier my tach does not work. My question is would it be posible to connect the grey tach wire to one of the yellow wire or even both of the yellow wires in order to get my tach back working.
