115 johnson tach. not working

before laying out more money for a new tach are there specific ways to test this motor or tack to see wich one is not working? i've cleaned wire's, checked power, ran jumper wire and still can only get it to read speratically. or is this a signal something else is breaking down.<br /><br />1995 johnson 115 crossflow<br />1995 four winns freedom

Check to see if the charging system is working. Check the voltage at the battery before cranking and then after.. Regulator/rectifiers gone bad normally show up first at the tach..They are connected electrically. You should get a voltage rise after the engine is running. Above 12.5 volts
