I have a 1995 crossflow 115 that died today. Every thing was running fine but after stopping motor for about the forth time it wouldnt start.
Got home started checking things over and found the folowing. Compression is 120 on all 4 cyl. i found fuel making its way to carbs. and good spark on all 4 cyl. and plugs are not fouled but the only thing it will do is spitt and cough and act like it wants to start. i checked the timing just by turning over at idle and at full advance and cant get the #'s in line with pointer. any idea's of what is happening? also this is the first time i ran this with out vro pump started mixing 50:1 in the fuel tank.

Impaler.... Eliminating the VRO and switching over to mixing your fuel/oil creates no problems. However, it's a good idea to remove the fuel line at the engine, then pump the fuel primer bulb until the fuel exits the fuel line with the tint of whatever oil you are using. Otherwise, you are running the engine with raw gasoline for whatever time it takes to draw the mixture to the carbs.

I assume you did plug the oil side of the VRO? If not, it will draw air. However, I seriously doubt that the above has anything to do with your present problem.

It sounds like you have sheared a flywheel key which would put the engine out of time. If anyone has had the flywheel off and did not torque the flywheel nut properly, that would cause the key to shear. If so, the flywheel and crankshaft tapers are now damaged and will require resurfacing, scraping, whatever it takes to correct the taper damage. Install a new key with the straight edge vertical to the crankshaft, not in line with the taper.

The flywheel nut torque is exactly 105 foot pounds.

thanks Joe, i did'nt think of that I will check it out today, being the flywheel was just removed recently to replace the voltage regulator. also before I disconnected the vro pump I mixed 50:1 in tank and ran for two hrs.
thanks i'll keep you posted.

hey Joe
I checked the flywheel today and everything is ok and key is not damaged. Is there any thing else I should be looking for. What are the symptoms of a bad power pack?
thanks impaler

Impaler.... Usually when a powerpack fails, it results in no spark. There are exceptions when it may lose spark to just one cyl, things of that nature, but usually, the spark is simply gone.

Is it possible that perhaps you have contaminated fuel. I've encountered that a few times (water). Even with a water/fuel seperator, I had rigs that had so much water that even the filter was loaded.

well I under estimated what fouled plug's can do to a 2 stroke. I showed them to a mechanic and he said they were fouled do to running it with double oil. replaced with new and know back up and running, now carrying around a spare set of plugs I should have had on the boat in the first place!!!
