Hi,just need afew questions answered.I am usually on the jonno, evinrude forums but i have just bought an early 80s 115 mariner and am having spark troubles.I am getting spark on only one plug on the one bank and nothing else. The owner said he replaced the stator recently,so if the stator was bad how can it still spark on one plug and all 5 ignition coils couldnt go bad at the same time? Not sure the testing procedure on the mariners.Disconnected the black/yellow still the same.Cleaned the wiring.Could anything kill the spark to these outboards.Serial number 6300037.Any advise would be appreciated,Thanks

Re: 115 mariner sparkless

Well the first thing you need is a proper spark tester. They are only a few bucks.
Then you need to buy or build a dva tester. They are very simple and cheap devices that you plug your multimeter into that allow you to check the stator and trigger.

You cannot properly test your electrical without them.

You may have bad packs, coils, triggers, stator or just a bad ground or frayed or broken wiring.

You need the proper tools to test with.
You can do a search here on iBoats and find some plans to build a dva or buy 1 for about $25.
A spark tester is under $10 and you should already have a multimeter don't you?

When you have these, post again and we'll walk you through it.

PS What kind of monster fish is that you're holding up?

Cheers mate. That fish is a gold spot estuary cod i caught on the great barrier reef Australia.
I am using a spark tester and i know i am only getting spark on one cylinder.I will get a dva adapter and check the stator properly. The stator is fairly new.The owner had it running a few days before i picked it up.I then had a ten hour tow home, could there be a connection there.Maybe something rattled loose. There is no iscolator switch between the motor and battery, could i have had a short somewhere on the trip home?
