Just put the boat on the water for the first time and I can only hit 15 mph at 2800 rpm. It just won't run any faster. What's wierd is if I steer HARD to the left rpms jump to around 3500 then about 10 seconds later it dies. After it dies I can restart it and do it all over again. It idles well and I just checked the fuel filter and it seems ok. Checked the plugs and all seems well. It almost seems as if it's fuel starves. Any ideas? Maybe I'll just take it to the shop.

Agreed..... not an easy diagnosis unless I could see it and drive it. It could be overpropped is all.. or else about 5 other things too.

-W

What year is the motor if it's the 2+2 model the bottom two carbs are not kicking in. You may need a new accelerator pump and spark plugs.

Mine did that too --- intermittently. What seems to be happening could be a couple things. If you use small plastic tanks with a plug on connector, is this. Sometimes if the tank is kinda low on fuel when you hook up to a second tank, there is a "air bubble" formed in the tanks own line, which will get to the carbs, and that starves the engine out for a minute, till you pump the bulb up again and restart. Switch only to really full tanks is best.

If you change to another tank without shutting off the motor first ( Never do this, right? ) the motors vacum will stretch the fuel pump diaphragm, and that is the end of that pump diaphragm, I have rebuilt my share (OMC & Merc.) over the years, and that seems to be a real weak point in two strokes. I am putting a 12Volt pressure fuel pump on my 115 2 stroker and a fuel regulator, so that can solve the problem, same as the new motors have on board. There is one pump for smaller motors that looks good, and works slick on my Triumph Spitfire 1500 cc.

The revs that the motor will hold seems to depend on how badly the fuel pump diaphragm is stretched, so it can vary. Usually about what you describe, enough to get home, not enough to have fun !!

Have fun, Cal
