i cant seem to get the powerhead off the midsection of my 115. i think i have all the bolts and nuts out. i count a total of 12 nuts and bolts that i have removed. i can get the powerhead to start to seperate, but at the back of the block, where the t-stat housing is, it wont seperate. i can get the front to seperate at the carbs by about 1/4 inch, but it wont lift of the rear. it almost seems like ther is a hidden bolt. i have looked at the BRP catlog and can find nothing. oh yeah, its a '79 evinrude 115 v-4 flat back

Re: 115 powerhead seperation

hey mike im about to put mine back on so ive been there.if youre sure all bolts/nuts are out then i would guess from my experience w/ mine that its corrossion between the two rear studs and the adapter plate. i had to use a 18" prybar prying off the adapter plate(pushing up on the studs). mine was used in saltwater, dont know your history.
BEWARE!!! if you dont need to remove exhaust cover dont.i had to drill out/retap or helicoil 12 out of 21 bolts. realy not fun.only to find out that i didnt need to take it apart.they broke instantly not from manhandling them. obviously to replace gaskets but they were fine.
do what you want obviously, but youve been WARNED!
hahahaha
good luck mike its a very rewarding experience doing it yourself.

yeah i figured that was the case. i'll have to bring more tools home from work. if i was going to be re-using the block, i would also be have to heli-coil some holes for the same cover, but my block has a hole in it:'(. i need to tear it down and see what else is still good.

Re: 115 powerhead seperation

You should have 6 long bolts, 2 short bolts and 4 nuts.

If the nuts are off the rear studs (have to come off from under) then the studs might be holding the block. You can pry up on those 2 studs but be careful. Make sure you got these, they're a pain to get to sometimes.

If you haven't dropped the lower unit, do so now. If you lift / pry up on the powerhead on an angle the top of the driveshaft may break off a piece of the crank where the lower seal goes.

Re: 115 powerhead seperation

Hi Mike,

I recently removedan old powerhead and installed a rebuilt one on my 115 73 Johnson. I agree with tschamp about the corrosion. I had to pry a bit to shake the powerhead loose. I don't remember exactly how many bolts there were, but there are some (two I think) that are accessable when the rear cowling is removed.

P.S. Go ahead and replace the thermostat components while you are there. That is if your installing a rebuilt powerhead.

i already did a t-stat, pump, tune, etc. this engine was running after i was given it for about 15 minutes. then it abruptly stopped. when i got it re-fired, it was only running on three cyl's, and no compression in #3. i removed the head to find a piece of the block had broken off, and lodged bteween the piston and cyl wall. it did a lot of damage and made block a 1 time anchor
