The 1996 115 Merc is a 4 cylinder, but the 135 is a 6 cylinder based off the 2.5 liter block. It is approx. 60-75 lbs. heavier depending upon shaft length and has much more torque on the bottom end. Good luck !!!

Where did you get the idea that they looked the same?

Re: 115hp and 135hp , whats the difference?

Canman,

I too own a 1996 Mercury 115 and I asked this same question one day last week, only I asked the difference between a 115 and a 125. I assume that is what you meant. If you want the difference between a 115 and 135, then I cannot answer your question because it more closely resembles a 150 than a 115.

If you are asking about a 125, then I know a little more. Several people claimed that the 115 and 125 are not the same, but several more chimed in that were familiar with these model engines. It is common thinking that the difference is in the carb jetting, but the guys that responded showed me that the difference was actually a complete set of carburetors. They even went as far as to find me a set on Ebay for reference. Here is the link to my questions and replies.

Hope this helps,

Re: 115hp and 135hp , whats the difference?

i have a 1989 115 and a 1988 135.i have run both engines on the same boat,1973 crestliner muskie.the 115 ran 43mph at 5300rpm and the 135 ran 52mph at 6000rpm. the 135 uses twice the fuel of the 115. i can,t decide which engine to put back on the boat. it will probably be the 115 because the speed wasn,t that much faster for the difference in fuel.
