Hello,

I just purchased this 1977 115 hp Evinrude for $150.00 The compression on all 4 cylinders was at 125psi. The model # is 115790s,and the serial # is j0001089.The previous owner sold it because he found a deal on a 150hp engine that he couldn't pass up. He said it ran like a top before he took it off of his boat. Did I pick this motor up for a fair price? I would also like to ask what it involves to rebuild the tilt/trim unit on this motor. He said it was sticking while going up and down. He started to rebuild it, but then bought the other motor. So I need to do the rebuild, and then reinstall it on my motor. I would also like to ask if there is a web site out there anywhere that I could view a repair manual for this engine?

Sounds like a great price if the PO was being truthful! :) Go to the BRP website for the parts breakdown for the engine. as for a service manual you'll probably need to buy one.

Forget viewing that repair manual.... you will end up buying one and I recommend a factory manual only.

MANY T&T problems are tilt tube related and I would check that first. The tube tends to bind and cause rough operation.

That is a great price. Ill give you $155 if you have trouble with the TNT ;)

Kidding aside, go to ebay and get yourself a factory OEM Service Manual. Sometimes I have found great deals arent so great, but lets hope that doesnt apply to you. Good luck.

That compression is still what it was back when it shipped from the factory. The parts catalog can be viewed online at: epc.brp.com. The first thing you will note when you open it up for your engine is that the engine was made with one of two different supplier's trim pump assemblies. You'll need to identify which pump/motor is actually on your engine. A lot of these old trim system components are NLA, so you may have to do some digging to find parts. You can get an original factory service manual from Ken Cook Co. in Milwaukee. (also at outboardbooks.com)

If you're going to work on the t/t yourself make sure you get the orginial manual as Emdsapmgr suggested above. NO Clymer or Seloc.

I would like to thank everyone for their replies to my inquiry. I will be looking to purchase some original OEM manuals for the motor. In the mean time I will barrow my boss's manuals, being I am working in a marine repair shop. Thank you again. I was lucky in finding the motor on Craigslist. Also, I wouldn't mess with Clymer or Seloc manuals.. I heard that they don't provide all of the info that they should, and that they have been known to leave out some very important information pertaining to motors.

HighTrim, thanks for the purchase offer, but my plans are to put this baby on the 18' Starcraft Holiday that I have instead of using the Mercury 85 that was on it.
