115hp I-6 starting question

I have a 1984 Mercury 115hp I-6. It tends to start up a bit rough hot or cold, once it?s going it runs great. The boat is a 94 so the control has 1 handle, not a separate idle leaver. Is it necessary to push the button that releases the gear linkage and advance the throttle a bit for an easier start or does something need adjusting?

Thanks.

I have the same 84' 115. They are tough to start. Push the button and put the handle forward halfway. You will feel it stop. There is like a notch or something. Sometimes you have to put the handle all the way forward for even more gas.

choke it (push the key in for a couple seconds)

take your time......let it rest between every few tries

If you do not have the cold start lever, then the throttle only button is the substitute. Usually there is no detent on the throttle or control, but you should not need to advance the throttle more than an inch or so.

Make sure the primer is pumped hard and hold the choke button while cranking the motor, until it starts.

Re: 115hp I-6 starting question

I just rebuilt my carbs last week and now mine starts so much easier.

I always had the most hard starting problems when it was very hot & humid out.
