I have a 1992 115 hp Johnson that needs a new impeller. I fallowed my manual instructions and after pulling the cotter pin on the **** linkage and shifting into reverse,I have only been able to get the lower unit to drop about one inch. After that it is stuck. I'm afraid to pull down too hard I'm don't want to break something.Could the drive shaft be stuck?Any suggestions? thanks. Jim

Re: 115hp lower unit removal

I don't know if your 92 is the same as my 89 200, but I had to remove a small bolt that attached the shift rod to the linkage under the front of the engine by the steering arm. I had to remove the lower cowling to make it easier to get to. Once the bolt was removed it slid right out, it is a little tricky getting it back up into the linkage when you put it back together, it took a couple of tries. Don't try to pry it down. Mine would only drop down about 3/4" before I removed that bolt. The rod slips up into a slot and then you put the bolt back in. Before you button it all up move your shifter and make sure its shifting.
Maybe someone else will post if yours is different than my 89.

Cotter pin ?? There should have been a "c" clip that you removed below the lower carb and then pushed the shift linkage toward port side. This should have disengaged the shift rod.
