I recently bought a new thermostat for my 1975 115 v4. The problem is when removing the housing the springs and all fell out and I am not sure how and what order they go in. When I first started the motor after buying it, it got hot so I replaced the water pump but it still gets hot fast even on the hose. Any pics or directions would be great.

Don't know for sure but the Seloc or Clymer manuals may have the info/pics you need. Local libraries usually have them on the shelf. Might try there. Failing that, give us a post and we'll see what we can do.

For around $35 American, you can get a reprint of the OEM service manual for your engine. Just search up Ken Cook Co., outboardwizard or marine.com. All sell reprints of the originals and also parts manuals.

By the way, you have TWO stat's, if it's a crossflow. Not to mentioned the bypass valves and springs.

I didnt see the need for 2 T stats on the diagrams. I looked at both models and the Rude diagram and it only refers to 1 T stat...

I am far from an expert, but again I only see the need for 1.

the motor is a johnson crossflow and there is one thermostat or vernatherm and the bypass valve and springs. I tested the stat and it works on the stove in a pan of water. I am just unsure of the order of installation.

The diagram linked to under ddbyrd3's post above shows the order of installation. Its part numbers 53, 54, & 55. Take a look see.

Did you have a temp gauge in the pot of water to measure the temp of the water when the T stat opened?

You will want to verify that, I did the same thing you did (verified them in a pan) re-installed them into the motor and it still overheated.

For the amount of work involved to change a "T" stat its worth buying a new one.

As far as the order of re-assembly, the attached diagram shows the order....

Refer to my other post...

I am working on trying to print the page of the exploded view but my printer wont cooperate with the web page size so that I can see in detail. Probably just write it down. No I didnt have a thermometer but the water didnt get too hot before opening. Also Ive read here about drilling holes in it. What do you think?

My opnion is this, If it was designed to have a hole in it, it would have one...

I am sure a resident expert will have more info on drilling holes in your T stat, I would just buy a new one, your there, they are cheap, and one less thing you will need to worry about once you put it all back together for quite some time...

Of course this is just my opnion.....

I agree. I never checked a thermostat in boiling water. If ever I questioned the operation of a thermostat, I simply replaced it. I figure the motor is not worth the risk.
By the way, have fun putting that back in. I replaced mine a couple months ago, and its not fun.

Party Barge....listen to Bass Cat....replace the vernatherm if there is any question about it along with anything else there that may be in question.

You can hold the assemblies together with rubber bands until the screws are in place. Makes it a little "easier". My Rude 90hp (86') got two t-stats and two springs. Always a fun time to replace. (yea BC....not fun!)
